I'm honestly baffled at this book's having so many 5-star reviews. It is RIDDLED with contradictions and factual errors, and large chunks of the book are "borrowed" from other sources. (They're credited, but still...we're talking entire chapters.) In some chapters, folic acid is recommended; in others, it's recommended AGAINST. It's unclear whether this is the result of numerous typographical errors ("folic acid" where it should say "folinic acid") or simple contradiction because the information is cobbled together from so many sources. A low-methionine diet is recommended, and then several chapters later the reader is told at length that low methionine is a common problem. Most of the "avoid" foods in the diet chapter have no explanation offered for why, specifically, they would be contraindicated for those with MTHFR polymorphisms. The sections on over- and under-methylation are a little difficult to follow, but it would appear he may use the terms in an opposite manner from what most others do, which is extremely confusing.Factual errors and mislabeling abound. For example, "Don't forget to add... B6 (25 mg -- in the form of hydroxycobalamin)..." (pg. 94). Hydroxycobalamin is not B6; it's B12. "If your Whole Blood Histamine is less than > 25-40...you should avoid and take folate." (pg. 93) That isn't a "less than" sign; it's a "greater than" sign, and "avoid and take folate" doesn't even make sense. (I assume there's another substance that should be listed in the sentence.) "Even if you are Heterozygous (have both the A1298C and the C677T)..." (pg. 143) This is COMPOUND heterozygous -- an important distinction from simply "heterozygous."The book even says, "Research does not support the belief that having this gene polymorphism means these people have poor folic acid metabolism"! (pg. 41) If the author doesn't believe MTHFR causes the issues it's believed to cause, then why write the book? (This line is, fortunately, contradicted in other portions of the book.)With so many contradictions and errors, it is difficult to trust any of the information provided. How does the reader know that a detail with which he is not familiar is not erroneous, as well? I would particularly recommend against this book for newbies to MTHFR, as it's both misleading and abundantly confusing.Having said all that, if you're willing to do some research on your own, there is some benefit to be had from this book. It can bring up new information/points you weren't aware of, that are a good starting point for independent research (to verify the veracity of the claims). I'm not sorry I read it. But I wouldn't recommend it for most readers.

I was so excited about this book after reading the Kindle sample and all the great reviews. Unfortunately, the Kindle sample (as I'm finding with other books) represented the best part of this book. The rest of the book is poorly written, formatted, and full of typos. The author at least twice refers to B6 as hydroxocobalamin when obviously he means B12. That's inexcusable. There is some good information but very little I had not already read on the web. In addition, some of his material read like it had been taken from the web and "re-purposed"; in fact, on a few pages I felt like I was reading straight from Dr. Ben Lynch's MTHFR websites. As per a lot of these MTHFR experts, Dan Purser offers up his own protocol, which seems mostly reasonable though slightly convoluted. As someone who has studied MTHFR for about three years intensely, I was disappointed overall in the value add of this book. The one positive is that he gets the information mostly right (if you ignore numerous contradictions and bad edits) and it's packaged all in one place so if you're new to the subject, it could potentially be useful. I say *mostly* right in part because of his exclusive focus on high homocysteine and lack of acknowledgment of hypohomocysteinemia (low homocysteine levels for homozygous MTHFR C677T folks). This is not 'the bible' on the topic like I was hoping but does give some good overview information.

This book offered me hope of finding relief for my 15 year old daughter's debilitating fatigue. She tested positive for the MTHFR mutation and her MD began treating the disease with two of the vitamins recommended by Dr. Purser in his treatment protocols. There has been no change to her fatigue, and so I greatly appreciate the additional testing recommended in this book to narrow her diagnosis. The book provides a roadmap for how to proceed. Without this book I would be left to navigate a frustrating myriad of advice offered on blogs. There is enough scientific information here to pass along to your physician. There is also much here a layperson can use to help them navigate the often overwhelming health care system.Other reviewers have commented that there are proofreading issues with this book. I would overlook this minor flaw and be grateful that Dr. Purser made this book available to the public. He summarizes information that is available to you from other sources, but it may take you a very long time to understand and organize this information on your own.

This book came out a week after my NP diagnosed me with MTHFR. I had never even known about it. All she had to say was that I had a higher chance of cardio problems. Really? So after seeing Dr. Purser's short video on Facebook and realizing that he was talking about the same thing, I ordered this book on Kindle. The book has taught me so much about this condition. There is so much information in this book about MTHFR and the different conditions involved, that It got confusing. I believe that this book would be great for my NP to read and then dispense her recommendation from there. I am not a doctor and most of the information was very technical. It would be nice to have a chart at the end to follow and then implement as you go. I did get a lot out of the section about SAMe. I first read about SAMe on [...] and how it helped with joint pain and depression. I tried it after realizing that I was in fact depressed during recovery from knee and hip replacement. It helped within days and I still use it every day for the last 7 years. (I KNOW when i've forgotten to take it.) I was surprised to find out that some people react in the opposite way and become suicidal. So, Do Your Research. I like Dr. Purser and have all of his books. I have also seen him at two separate seminars. My Primary Doctor didn't even seem to know what MTHFR was. I am constantly shaking my head at the lack of further education in the medical world.
