Despite all the thousands of caricatures and artistic re-interpretations of the nuclear "mushroom cloud," photographs of the real thing are still intensely frightening and visually fascinating. The "thousand suns" referred to in the Bhagavad Gita, from which J. Robert Oppenheimer quoted when the first atomic bomb was detonated in New Mexico on July 16, 1945, are depicted here in 100 carefully selected photographs of the aboveground nuclear tests conducted by the United States in the Nevada and New Mexico deserts and over the Pacific Ocean. Culled by Light (Full Moon) from formerly classified documents held by the United States National Archives and Los Alamos National Laboratory, the photos, dating from 1942 to 1962, are awe-inspiring. Crisply printed on black glossy stock, each photo is printed full-page recto, with the facing verso page containing only the plate number, the name of the test ("Trinity"; "Mike"; "Wahoo"), the test date and the number of kilotons (or megatons) of energy released. Extensive notes on each photo and test are in the back, along with a bibliography. Many of the photos show only the blast, but some have people. One photograph, in particular ("019. Simon"), does not show an explosion: soldiers huddle in a trench, identifiable only by the blurred shapes of their helmets, with what looks like glowing debris raining upon them. The back caption notes: "In a moment the ground and air shockwaves will toss them like dolls, then fill their mouths with radioactive dust and also make it temporarily impossible to see." Ultimately, that particular test "scattered deadly fallout throughout southwest Utah" and "highly radioactive rain fell in Albany, New York the following day." Aboveground tests ended with the 1963 Partial Test Ban Treaty. Text-free, portrait-large photographs--many in dramatic full color, mainly crimson and black by land, clouded skies by sea--are the hundred metaphorical suns promised. Rather more than half of them disclose the proverbial mushroom cloud, luminous or vapor-borne. Each one is a prompt, distant shot of an American nuclear weapon explosion, made during the years from 1945 to 1962, until the Limited Test Ban Treaty quelled both public witness and most fallout through burial underground. The meticulous compiler--photographer Michael Light, whose book Full Moon drew wide praise--ordered his portraits here for visual effect. A contextual look discloses much of weapon development amid the politics of unbridled state power. Since 1945, with the first test and the two calamitous attacks on Japanese cities, the explosive energy ranged from Little Feller I, a test of a midget atomic rocket suited for one-man launch, up to H-bomb Mike, shown in five striking views from 1952. Mike, the first large American thermonuclear device, raised the ante as measured in tons of TNT, from a 10-ton truckload to a fanciful TNT-laden boxcar train 2,000 miles long, rattling past at full speed during two nights and one day. Numbers do not convey everything. The image that most compels a viewer is one from 1946 itself, the first postwar year. The U.S. Navy felt the need for a demonstration of the new atomic threat against warships (no H-bombs as yet). The Bikini Atoll test was duly prepared in the summer of 1946. One fast daylight snapshot from the air shows something near human scale. Against the huge foamy tower of seawater thrown upward, a few tiny black splinters are dwarfed. The furious waters reached and ruined them. Are they kayaks? They were in fact among the largest battleships ever sent to sea, Japan's naval pride, anchored empty as targets. H-bomb tests are observed from 50 miles off; their images here are mostly colorful and complex layers of cloud formations out to the horizon. A few plates show witnesses, some of them troops set closer to the fireball than we would so casually plan today. The documentation is admirable. And Michael Light has put his own views briefly but clearly at the end of the book, recognizing that photographs tell only how things look: "When it's all we have, however, it's enough to help understanding. It exists. It happened. It is happening. May no further nuclear detonation photographs be made, ever." Philip Morrison, emeritus professor of physics at M.I.T., wrote the book review column for this magazine for more than 30 years. He was a member of the Manhattan Project and a witness of the first test.

Incredible book with unexpected historical details on the USA's endless, mindbogglingly insane atmospheric nuclear testing programs that spewed radioactive fallout into the global ecosystem with impunity and utter disregard for nature, animals, and human life for nearly half a century.

This is a very handsome volume, with images every bit as beautiful as the subject matter is terrifying. Shown are mushroom clouds from near and far, in black and white and in color, and soldiers hunkered down and bracing themselves against the burst in the distance.There's the seemingly harmless--and innocently named--Little Feller I (#46), a "mere" 18-ton-TNT-equivalent delicate puff rising from the barren Nevada desert, captured 40 seconds after detonation.And then consider Bravo, the largest single nuclear explosion ever. At 15 megatons--the equivalent of 15 million tons of TNT--it released in an instant more energy than all the ordnance spent in World Wars I and II combined.The list of captions in the back of the book provides interesting data about each test and makes a nice tidy summary of our government's Cold War excesses. Light's book includes a chronology of developments in the nuclear era, including year-by-year counts of Soviet and U.S. nuclear weapons stockpiles. It is noteworthy that, during the hottest years of the Cold War, when the U.S. public was being warned of a widening "missile gap" with the Soviet Union, we always had a greater number of warheads, often as many as ten times more.

About the quality of the book: It is a book of photographs, but the photo reproduction in the book is only ok, at best. Many of the photos in this book are published in other books, and are reproduced with poorer tonal quality and definition in this book. Some photos, such as one of some seated observers at the Greenhouse Dog test, are obviously edited or enhanced for dramatic or artistic effect. The reproduction of the color photos is sometimes strange; images that were probably recorded on extended range film, orange/yellow emulsion, are printed as orange/yellow color images. The notes for those images only describe them as 'Orange picture of...' or 'Red picture of...'; no further explanation is given.The photos are mostly of fireballs and clouds; don't bother buying it if you are interested in photos of other things.I'll keep, and put on the shelves, my copy of this book. It has a handful of images that I haven't seen else where. But it isn't a book that I would recommend. There is too little in it for its' size and price.

Amazing photographs from our nations dark past during a cold era. Shocking to view what went on classified for so many years. Hope we never have to see it happen again. I agree with some of the reviews that some of the photos are full sheets and are lost in the seam. It is still a great book with plenty of photos seamless views.

Beautiful, haunting reminder of what humanity is capable of. This book offers a visual and emotional experience that history texts cannot. Excellent gift for anyone fond of history or politics. I'd gladly buy again for my own collection.

A wonderful piece of work. The author thankfully did not over-politicize nuclear weapons or U.S. nuclear testing policys, and the reader is left with incredible pictures and factual commentary. The book does not so much tell a story as it presents for the reader a dangerous time in American history for reflection. Thankfully, we are still here to reflect on these ominous, but nonetheless beautiful pictures. I think perhaps John Foster Dulles has been vindicated.

Terrifyingly beautiful. 100 Suns is a stark reminder of the power unleashed by atomic weapons.

This is a good decorating book but not great. If you're an American ordering, be aware it is published in Great Britain and includes terms, cakes recipes, metric measuring system that can be hard to understand. The cakes are beautiful to look at in the pictures they include but not too easy to make. Some of the ingredients are hard to find here is the USA and the glossary of terms is more for European cooks. I love to browse the book but find my "Betty Crocker Cake Decorating Book" is more realistic to use.

Lots of great tips and tricks. I expect I'll definitely up my cake decorating game thanks to this book.

This book has good information but when I read the title as "Beginner's" guide I thought I would get something that would allow me create decorated cakes with simple techniques. This book uses a lot of fondant and "european" style cakes. I was looking for a more informal type of instruction book. Overall, the book is O.K. but not what I expected.

Magic Awakens is an unfolding story. At first you think "What does this have to do with magic". Then it unfolds and like a flower in early morning one petal at a time it gives a peak at the bueaty inside. As you continue reading it captures you and won't let go until you get through to the end. You then exhale and realize you have been reading all night again.This book is exciting, warm, and the authoress draws you in dying to know what is next. It's always a suprize! This is well worth the cost and you will mark the author so you can get her next book as soon as it comes out.

And by 'origin', I mean that two ways: The first book of a series so it has to detail the people and places, plus it tells us the story of Clara's magic awakening--and does it quite interestingly in a bathtub, but not with the best of results. (Or: don't mix your elements until you understand them.)There are already a lot of great reviews for this book telling a lot about the story. I just want to say that it moves at a good pace and kept me reading longer than I intended each night. Nicely done, Lucia Ashta.Another Big Plus for me was: I did not notice and spelling or grammar issues within this book--Fantastic!She does have a request in the beginning of Book 2 to email her if you find any. I find that the sign of an author who really wants her works to shine. (I read Book 2 right after finishing Book 1)The story also has a 'proper' ending IMO. The major points are wrapped up, but it leaves the reader to start the next step in Clara's journey in understanding her magic. (Note: Book 2 starts exactly where Book 1 leaves off.)

I am a "spiritual junkie" but every so often I want to take a break from my learning and just enjoy a great read... but still keep the "spiritual" side alive. That is what this book is... spiritual in a different sense then I am used to but intriguing enough that April 26th won't come soon enough.. which is when the sequel will be released and I've already preordered it so that I can follow Clara as she experiences the wonders of this magic. Lucia's writing style is amazing! I love the way she weaves the story... from her character build ups to the era in which they lived.. you feel as though you are sitting alongside them and watching the story unfold. Love love love it!!!

This was a fun book. The plot was interesting and not predictable, the heroine was strong and supporting by a good cast of supporting characters. The world created by Lucia Ashta was original and in some ways very innovative. Neither "high fantasy" nor "urban fantasy" but a story that lovers of both will enjoy. It's a great start to a series and I'm looking forward to more.

Man talk about breaking it down to build it back up! Lucia totally rocked this baby right here. I mean she always shines, but in this one its as bright as the sun. I never saw what was coming until it was to late. The characters are unique and diverse with different traits and personalities it literally takes your breath. The scenes are descriptive and graphic that it really comes alive. With all the twists and turns the excitement and adrenaline are running high. Lucia is absolutely brilliant with an imagination and insight she covers the smallest details so you can actually picture it in your mind's eye. Lucia did.an absolute remarkable job bringing this read together beautifully. Fantastic job Lucia, thanks for sharing this awesome read with us.

I enjoyed this book on so many levels!First of all, I really appreciated the very intelligent and skillful way in which magic was woven into the central story-line, which essentially is about a vulnerable and yet innately powerful heroine, Clara, "coming of age" and gently losing her innocence in the process. From a heroine having no magic (or even knowledge of magic) it slowly builds until, by the end of the book.. well.. I will leave it there for you to discover what happens.Secondly - and I really really love this - is the consistent respect that Clara shows to everyone. This includes her parents, her maid, her sister, the horses that carry her, and even nature itself. What a positive message and certainly one that in itself sets this work apart from others of its genre.Throughout the book, Lucia also beings out various strong contrasting elements such as that of the rich nobles versus poor peasants, evil versus good, old versus young and innocence versus worldly, and others, all of which serve to add flavour and colour.This is actually only the second book by Lucia that I have read and I have to say I really like the way she writes.Definitely recommended!

Clara is a 16-year-old whose cold parents are trying to marry her off to improve their family standing. She has four sisters, but only the youngest has any feeling for her. She meets her prospective husband and thinks she might be able to live with him, but he makes some remarks about his next-oldest brother. Then this arranged marriage falls through, and Clara is told she will marry that brother Winston. She knows that would be disaster and she fell ill of a fever. Nobody could get rid of the fever, so her father hired a "magician" to cure her. The magician took her away to the family lake house to treat her, and that's where it all starts. It comes to a head when Winston and his friends attack, hurt the magician and try to rape Clara. Clara discovers she has magic and saves them. You could find this plot in many other books; what you can't find there is how it feels. Clara's thoughts and emotions come through loud and clear in this book.

Magic Awakens, The Witching World 1, is an awesome book. It is a coming of age book where Clara is learning to use her awakening magic. She must contend with autocratic and power hungry parents and her arranged marriage to a brutal betrothed. Lucia has created an exceptional story line and realistic and wonderful characters. This story grabs you at page one and keeps you turning pages to the end. As you finish, you realize that you are excited to continue this series. I highly recommend this story - you will not be disappointed.

An excellent companion to Mr. Koren's first Wabi-Sabi book. I love that he has shared some history and how his thinking has evolved over the years. For anyone interested in this way of being, the new volume resonates. It is, like the first, a keeper.

I read the first Wabi-Sabi book by Koren over 15 years ago. It is my "bible". I am an artist, designer, purist, poet and aesthetic thought, practice guru & fanatic. Ok, I am an art nerd. Buy them both. Read and enjoy.

I’ve looked forward to this book since I learned of its impending publication April 2014. I greatly enjoyed WABI-SABI because it helped me understand object traits that I have appreciated since childhood.This new book primarily deals with four topics. The largest part of the text looks at the history and context of the words wabi and sabi, naturally focusing on the tea ceremony and its paraphernalia. Because the first book also includes a brief history, there is a certain amount of repetition in this section. After that Leonard Koren discusses his reasons for writing the first book and further defines wabi-sabi. To finish the text, he answers two questions: can the maker intentionally create a wabi-sabi object and can the electronic world ever be described as having wabi-sabi traits? For me, this last section is the most important one.

Not sure why he felt a need for this supplement other than to attempt to reinforce his claim of authorship of the term "wabi-sabi". His first book was itself an excellent explication of the concepts. Fewer words are sometimes better than more.

Clearly captures and presents the underlying motivations and drivers of a complex and obscure philosophy. Never done, never perfect, never eternal. An excellent travelogue of a dynamic journey.

This excellent book provides much food for thought and creativity. I enjoyed it immensely.

An intriguing sequel to Koren's earlier book. I am enjoying learning more about Wabi-Sabi.

Has very little explanations, no diagrams or pictures showing how to create the stitches! I would not recommend for someone with out knowledge of the basics.

Wow, this book is SO incredibly bad! I seriously feel dumber now after having read it. There's so many spelling errors and missing words and lots of grammatical errors. My grammar is straight up AWFUL, so you know it's gotta be bad if even I can catch a ton of mistakes! This book seems like it was fully written in a single day without any sort of proofreading or double checking for errors done to it before it was officially printed & published. Explanations were extremely vague and couldn't teach a beginner anything even if their life depended on it. There were no pictures or illustrations provided to help show the reader what the author was evidently talking about, and so the book seemed to HEAVILY rely on the reader already having lots of foreknowledge on how to properly crochet just to be able to grasp the concepts within. It felt like I was just given vague and choppy DEFINITIONS rather than actual teaching demonstrations that would of been especially helpful for a new beginner like myself. The author clearly just writes like they talk, not paying much mind to what they're actually explaining to the reader, and if what they're saying is complete or properly laid out enough for the reader to be able to fully grasp the materials set forth. I had SUCH a hard time following along with the material because of that. I was constantly left scratching my head wondering what they really meant and if I was even doing it right. I still have no clue if I was or not, the huge lack of pictures or detail left me with the inability to compare my work with theirs to see if my futile attempts at crocheting were even becoming remotely successful at all. I had really hoped that I could have walked away atleast learning SOMETHING from this book, even if it wasn't much, but all I really learned was how bad of a train wreck this piece of work was. Even my basic knowledge of crocheting couldn't help me grasp what they were trying to convey. The material just felt so shoddy and incomplete. I'm still not any closer to learning how to crochet after reading this book, and if anything, it left me walking away feeling even more confused and frustrated than I was before I even started the journey. It was just a total waste of time trying to decipher what the author actuality ment to say within those muddled pages. I'm certainly not one to condone burning books, BUT if ever I decide to change my mind this one would be the first book I'd toss into the flames, it was just THAT BAD. If you're like me and you're actually TRYING TO LEARN how to crochet then don't waste your time with this book. Just keep on walking cuz your certainly not going to find anything that's of use to you in here.

Taisia Kitaiskaia is the author of Ask Baba Yaga: Otherworldly Advice for Everyday Troubles, based on her column voiced by a Slavic witch in The Hairpin. She holds an MFA from the James A. Michener Center for Writers and has published poetry in journals such as Crazyhorse, Guernica, Gulf Coast, Pleiades, and The Fairy Tale Review. Katy Horan channels the Witch archetype through her drawings and paintings of Appalachian granny witches, full moon ceremonies, and strange folk magic. Her work has been shown in galleries throughout North America and featured in anthologies such as Beasts! (Fantagraphics), The Exquisite Book (Chronicle), and Dark Inspiration (Victionary).

An excellent introduction to the magical and fantastical offerings of a variety of female authors. From some of the most well-known and celebrated writers of our time (eg. Toni Morrison) to new-to-me discoveries, Kitaiskaia weaves together tasty morsels, leaving you curious and wanting more. Thankfully, she generously offers recommended readings with each feature. Horan's grasp of all things spooky and dreamy is clear in her wonderful illustrations which set the perfect mood (think a refined Edward Gorey). They are digestible enough to lazily peruse, but complex enough to go back and explore for hidden gems and symbols again and again. Highly recommend this cover to cover delight!

This book features lovely poetry and illustrations about a comprehensive, global list of important female authors. It is a beautifully charming book with a sharp edge and I especially loved how the style of the poetry and the art complemented each other. However, I will say that the only thing I didn't love about the book was the layout. It is put together a bit more like a gift book--I assume for marketability purposes--when it's really a book of poetry and art in many ways and some of the layout distracts from the attention on the content. Don't let that stop you from buying this book though. It's really a treasure and a beautiful way of discovering amazing women writers that you may not already know about!

An enchanting, beautifully illustrated book that pays homage to the great women of literature. "Literary Witches" is structured around two-page spreads that pair illustrations with poetic introductions to a "witchy" writer. The book includes favorite writers of mine like Shirley Jackson and Emily Dickinson, but I also learned about writers I hadn't heard of before like Yumiko Kurahashi and Alejandra Pizarnik (the book is international in its scope and includes a lot of great writers of color). This would be a great gift for budding authors & recent graduates, poetry lovers, any woman who needs a reminder of her inner strength, and many more!

This book is a magical compilation of influential female writers and poets. I would give this book to every goddess in my life, young and old. It would make a perfect gift for any young reader or writer.The illustrations by Katy Horan pull you into the world of each writer. Flowers, skulls, spells Oh my! Specific items, relevant to each literary witch, float about the pages. This book is informative as it is transformative. Katy and Taisia have manifested a book about the mysterious inner world of our literary heroes.

I have not read a book like this before, and was very impressed with its originality. The writing is poetic in it's facts and in its imaginative fiction. The illustrations of each author are amazingly beautiful. I also love the little illustrations throughout the book: such as a knife, a book with an eye, etc. Finally, I love that this book incorporates women from varied historical time periods, ethnicities, and social classes. Get a copy for yourself and for a friend!

The book is slight, and comes out to little more than a suggested reading list, but there are some gems of language as the author conjures these women as witches.

Purchased this book as a treat for myself and I absolutely love it. Taisia Kitaiskaia's clever and magical prose is delightful and Katy Horan's drawings are wonderful. I've enjoyed being introduced to new to me writers and revisiting writers that I've loved for years and being amazed at the details in the illustrations. This is a book that I'll look through time and time again.

I enjoyed all parts of it, both the illustrations and the text. Not gripping enough to make me read it through at a sitting but pleasant to read several before each night.
