About the Author
Diane Keaton has been recognized for her work in California architectural preservation. She is widely known for her work in theater and film, and has won numerous awards and accolades, including an Oscar for her role in Annie Hall and praise for her work as director of Unstrung Heroes. D. J. Waldie is the author of Holy Land: A Suburban Memoir, which received the California Book Award for nonfiction in 1996, Where We Are Now: Notes from Los Angeles, and co-author of Real City: Downtown Los Angles Inside/Out. This is a beautiful reference book, and as designers, we rely on it for project inspiration. Dianne Keaton had a hand in this publication, and it is a treasure. We bought this as a second copy to loan to our clients, very happy to have found this on Amazon!
This is a wonderful, evocative book. Takes me back to dreamy, fanciful Southern California - the one that may have existed in the early part of the previous century. If you are looking for a book that has professionally laid out, full-color photos of exteriors and rooms, don't get this one. But if you want to re-visit that romantic, magical time that is still evoked in these exquisite structures, go for it - you will be rewarded and inspired. (Actually, this is a lovely and interesting - and very large - coffee table book, as well...)
This is a beautiful book but it has some major problems I think. There are too many closeups and detail shots and not enough big picture photos. The photos are very dark and the lighting while very interesting does not allow one to gleen much information for the reader. Not enough pictues of interiors that are furnished. The black boarder to the photos just adds to the the darkness.If you want to learn and not just browse about this look, then this is not the book for you.
As one of the three children of George and Louise Welsh who purchased one of these homes (Casa Romantica) in 1960 I am thrilled with this book. Our family considers it a work of art as well as a fitting memorial to the history of this very special architecture. My parents owned the Casa Romantica for 30 years, the longest of any of the previous inhabitants. We have a unique and enduring love of the "Casa" and the City of San Clemente who have created the Cultural Center that it is today. We sincerely thank Ms. Keaton for her love of this style and for the gift of this compilation.Karen Welsh
Beautiful book.
This book is special in that the photographs have captured the spanish details that make a building warm and desirable. Slowly going through the pages is an experience that is so rich and pleasant that it leaves you with a natural excitement for tradition and life.
I purchased this as a research book for work. First off, I was taken aback by the reduced quality of the paper inside the book - very thick, and seemed to be a little bit gritty.This book is just not that special. Although meticulously researched, I must say that it felt like every house looked the same. The photographs are mostly of the architecture of these structures. It is gorgeous architecture, but after the first two houses, I got bored. Seems like there are pages and pages of shadows on walls, and empty rooms with beamed ceilings.I recommend the book Courtyard Housing of Los Angeles instead. That book is outstanding and a must have for fans of this California style.
This is an excellent ART book. The photos are exquisite but the whole of the book leaves a little too much left unsaid. The beauty of these period houses are the huge quantity of fine detail and how those details interact. To really get a feel for this type of style it's important to see those details in total and not just specific details in a vacuum. While the shots were all beautiful it would have been much better if the overall feel of the book was more encompassing instead of a macro view with the focus on fine art photography. I absolutely loved the photography, I just was left wanting a little more.
