Anatomy of a Scientific Discovery by Jeff Goldberg published by Bantam Books, 1989Reviewed by w. P. PalmerThe subtitle of this book which is 'The race to discover the secret of human pain and pleasure' perhaps gives the reader a little more idea of what the book is about. The front cover also informs us that 'The New Yorker' thought the book was 'fascinating'. I am interested in the underlying themes of the book that relate to the place of serendipity in scientific discovery and also to the human characteristics and values of scientists who make discoveries. The review will attempt to assess how far the book was able to satisfy these interests. The story starts in 1973 at an obscure medical school in Aberdeen, Scotland and describes the work of two biochemical researchers there. One was John Hughes who was then busy visiting local slaughter houses collecting huge quantities of pigs brains from which he was mak¬ing a thick soup from which he hoped to extract a naturally occurring `morphine'. The other researcher was the elderly (then 71 years old) Hans Kosterlitz, who was the director of an independent unit for the study of addictive drugs and somewhat of a character. This rather unlikely duo succeeded with the help of a variety of other specialists by October 1975 in producing and in finding the structure of two enkephalins. This story is complicated by the explanations of how other research laboratories, better financed and equipped, were going in the race to produce endorphins and the lucky breaks that the Aberdonians had in reaching their goal. That story takes up the first half of the book. The second half becomes considerably more complicated as initially there were perhaps a dozen or so pure scientists interested in this area. At this stage the major drug companies became interested and by 1983 at the end of the period covered by the book, the research area has about 1200 interested scientists. A whole range of science issues arise naturally from the book, particularly those involved with the ethics of scientific research. For example, the question of credit for research in terms of reputation and prizes. At several points it is this search for individual fame that appears to be the main motivation behind the scientist's work. There is further evidence that the work of some female investigators did not receive sufficient credit. There are questions of ethics at some points at what might seem excessive cruelty to animals. Overall the book provides a good case study of scientific research undergoing a paradigm shift, with brilliant individual scientists producing a few isolated substances with limited practical uses, expanding into the synthesis and production of a whole family of compounds with a multiplicity of medical applications. Yes the book provided me with plenty of food for thought, though the style is somewhat journalistic, though many may find that an attractive feature.BILL PALMEROriginally published in STANT Magazine, October/ November, 1994, p. 19.

Item delivered on time, was as described

I read this book many years ago, and life scineces have become much more sophisticated since then, but it's a very readable story of the ups, downs, and general quirkness of scientific discovery.

Read this several years ago and was fascinated.

A good first novel is refreshing, but the second is always a test of whether a writer is good or just lucky. "We Are Many" show that Taylor's Bobiverse is not a fluke, and that he is a writer able to capture the audiences attention. The plot elements are often a little hard to keep track of as the Bobiverse fragments and expands, but the stories are compelling, unique and have legs. I look forward to more, whether in the Bobiverse or elsewhere.

I honestly just wish it was longer.I found no problems with this book and can't dock it a star just because I want more.I recommend this book to those that love good sci-fi.

Bravo sir. This is a brilliant second book that left me looking at everything else in my reading queue and going "meh". It took me a couple of days to get around to actually picking up something else as I knew there was nothing else pending that would be remotely as good.As I just noted in my review of the first installment, the author has done an amazing job of crafting a story where the reader cares more about the Von Neumann machines than the people. While the people are an essential plot element they are very much secondary and far less interesting in spite of their being adequate fodder there for several conventional, and far less interesting, books. The evolution of the "Bobs" continues to be fascinating and the "Others" provides a necessary plot device for encouraging further growth in that community as the book progresses.I'm very much looking forward to the next installment.

Loved it! Listened to it on audio and cannot recommend it highly enough. Audio is the way to go with this series. Ray Porter narrates it perfectly. He captures the essence of each and every "Bob" and delivers the humor in a perfect manner. The story is fun, funny, exciting and at times, even touching. I love all of the "Bobs" senses of humor. This is not a book to read as a standalone. You definitely need to read book 1 first, but that's not a hardship as that one is fantastic too.If you like your sci-fi with humor, I highly recommend this series. And I recommend it even more on audio. You can buy the kindle book and the audible version for less than $10 I think. That's a steal!

The first book in the Bobiverse was cute and spoke to the inner geek in many of us that wanted to explore, defend, and create. It was exciting, fresh, and extremely upbeat. This book explores the musty attic of the Bobiverse. There is more drama, and the tone is decidedly **darker**.Nothing is really resolved in this book either. Even the things that you initially think will be resolved end up being uncertain at best. That said, Dennis Taylor is a good writer, and the narrator is exceptional.I recommend this book if you *loved* the first book and want to see where Taylor takes the Bobiverse. If you felt the first book was "meh" then you will want to take a pass on this one. If you are new to the Bobiverse then I recommend that you read/listen to the first book before making any decisions about this one.** Beware Spoilers Follow **This book explores the neurosis of the Bobs. One Bob falls in love with a human woman. One Bob eventually commits suicide. One Bob plays God and becomes morose when rejected by the species he hopes to elevate. Some of the Bobs become sociopaths and refer to humans (and all biological life forms) as "empherials."You get the dark side of things. Clearly some of the Bobs want to experience life as a living, breathing, sensing creature again, and a lot is made of the android project. We meet the evil replicants from Brazil again, and the reader thinks that the Bobs have wiped out this threat when it is revealed that they will be "the 'Snidley Whiplash' twirling their mustache in every episode."The book further explores the Others. We first met their mega-ant-robots in the first book, but by the end of this book the Bobs have so annoyed the Others that they announce their intention to destroy Earth and the Bobs' primary colony stars. Quite frankly, the Others seem like a monolithic threat that the Bobs cannot possibly beat by the end of this book. There are some weaknesses though. The species has confined itself to one star system, and there is one central Queen without competitors. If the Bobs can devise a way to destroy the central hive then all will be well except for the annoying Brazilian shadow threat. All in all, I will read/listen to Book 3, but I was somewhat disappointed by this outing in the Bobiverse.

Second book of a three book space opera trilogy. I read the POD (print on demand) trade paperback version which has nice paper and fonts. The author is promising the third book in the series late this year. I will purchase and read it.The Von Nuemann space ship probes captained by the Bob AI have multiplied into 40+ and have now explored over 100 star systems. Things have gone both good and bad. And the "Others" now know about the Bob probes and Earth due to their capture of the Chinese Von Neumann probe. The evacuation of Earth due to the fast moving ice age is not going well. The fifteen million survivors on Earth are slowly starving to death as the crops have now totally failed and all of the food is coming from orbital farms.

I really enjoy the book, the story is interesting, it is nice to have the story written from the perspective of an introvert. The only negatives I had had to do with the fact women are practically invisible, present only as minor characters in the form of love interests. All the important characters (even excluding Bob) are male. Also it would be interesting to have others participate in the decision making as the only decision making happens in the bobeverse. Finally the ecologically unsound decisions of eliminating fauna based on how much you like them or not, is rather jarring and aliens being 'evil' because they don't subscribe to our morality is also a bit odd. All that said, I enjoy the series and have already bought the next one.

The Language of Angels: A Story About the Reinvention of Hebrew, by Richard Michelson

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 3—Hebrew as a colloquial language died out around 200 BCE, when Jews were driven out of Jerusalem and settled in various places around the world. They learned the languages of their adopted countries and used Hebrew only for prayer. Eliezer Ben-Yehuda is credited with reinventing Hebrew as the unifying language of the Jewish people, and he dedicated his entire life to creating a modern Hebrew dictionary. Michelson tells his story through the eyes of Ben-Yehuda's young son, Ben-Zion, who grew up in Jerusalem in the 1880s. While the other children in his neighborhood spoke Yiddish, Arabic, Spanish, or Ladino, Ben-Zion's father insisted that he speak only Hebrew. He wanted Ben-Zion to be "the first child in more than two thousand years who [would] grow up speaking only the beauty of our ancient tongue." Ben-Zion helped his father create new Hebrew words for "ice cream," "bicycle," and "school"—and within one generation, modern Hebrew was born. Inspired by illuminated manuscripts, the bright, decorative watercolor illustrations in oranges and reds beautifully complement the text and integrate Hebrew letters and words throughout. A comprehensive three-page afterword provides additional information about Ben-Zion and his parents, as well as the history of Hebrew, Jerusalem, and the modern state of Israel. VERDICT Hebrew teachers and students in Jewish schools will welcome this gorgeous new picture book about how the language developed and the impact of one person's perseverance on an entire people.—Rachel Kamin, North Suburban Synagogue Beth El, Highland Park, IL

Review

It isn't easy being the child of a visionary. Ben-Zion's father is Eliezer Ben-Yehuda, a man determined to revive Hebrew as a living, everyday language—even though most of his fellow Jews in 19th-century Jerusalem accuse him of sacrilege and are content speaking Yiddish or the languages of their native lands. Eliezer insists on raising Ben-Zion as the first native speaker of modern Hebrew, which makes for tense family moments and a lonely childhood. But gradually, father and son persuade other children that speaking Hebrew might not be such a bad idea, and that they can have a hand in building the language "word by word." Gudeon (Grandma's Wedding Album) turns Hebrew letters and words into graphic elements that dance across the pages and frame the text, although it's not enough to counter the wooden feel of her vignettes. But Michelson (Fascinating: The Life of Leonard Nimoy) knows how to turn a complex story into both a brain tickler (how do you invent a word for "ice cream" or "bicycle"?) and a compelling emotional journey. Endnotes provide additional context, including where Michelson's story diverges from the historical record.—Publishers WeeklyThe ancient Hebrew language enters the modern world. In 1885 Jerusalem, a young boy named Ben-Zion cannot converse with the polyglot children of his age because his father has decreed that he speak only Hebrew, "the first child in more than two thousand years" to do so. The father, Eliezer Ben-Yehuda, is a Zionist immigrant to Palestine and fervently believes that Jews from every country, speaking so many different languages, should return to the language of their ancestors and of Jewish Scripture. Ben-Zion is not popular in the neighborhood; some consider Hebrew a holy tongue to be used only in prayer. The father persists and finds that he needs to invent words to modernize the ancient language. Thus, by combining the Hebrew words for "wheel" and for "a pair of" he creates a word for bicycle. Ben-Yehuda's work leads to a network of schools, a dictionary, and the eventual designation of Hebrew in 1948 as the national language of Israel. Michelson's account, based on history, is presented as a story with invented dialogue, which he addresses in his author's note. Gudeon's digitized watercolor illustrations, full of children, are lively and feature Hebrew words and letters as part of the page design. A lively introduction to the work of a Hebrew language scholar and lover—and his family.  - Kirkus Reviews Hebrew as a colloquial language died out around 200 BCE, when Jews were driven out of Jerusalem and settled in various places around the world. Although always used for religious prayers and rites, Hebrew had died out as a spoken language more than 2,000 years before and lacked terms for modern ideas and objects. Ben-Yehuda created new words, often borrowing from related languages, and published a modern Hebrew dictionary, his milon. Through his efforts, Hebrew became Israel's official language in 1948. Michelson's text draws on Ben-Yehuda's memoirs, although he tells this story from the perspective of Ben-Yehuda's young son, Ben-Zion. Gudeon's mixed-media illustrations depict period clothing and architecture, and she effectively incorporates Hebrew letters and words into the art. Appended with a generous afterword explaining the changes Michelson made to this story, this title also offers information about important individuals, the Hebrew language, and Palestine. With a smoothly written text and an appealing child focus, this makes a perfect resource for religious school collections and public library language shelves.—Booklist

An amazing story of how the Hebrew language was resurrected, great story for kids!

Just a beautiful book

This book is about famous father-and-son Hebrew language pioneers, Eliezer and Itamar Ben Yehuda. When Eliezer Ben Yehuda arrived in Jerusalem in 1881, the spoken languages of the Jews were Yiddish and Ladino....and other hybrid combos .... plus the local languages where they lived. Hebrew was reserved for prayer and study.Ben Yehuda, lexicographer and journalist, was determined to revive Hebrew as a spoken language. He was so successful that by the end of 1922, the British Mandate authorities recognized Hebrew as the official Jewish Language. This book is the story of that accomplishment -- how Ben Yehuda created the first modern Hebrew-speaking family, and the difficulties this made for his son, Itamar. Which brings us to the book's opening line, "Once there was a child without a friend". When Ben Yehuda and his wife made aliyah, he was determined to create a pure Hebrew-speaking atmosphere in their home. Their son, Itamar, was required to hear, speak and communicate exclusively in Hebrew and was isolated from non-Hebrew speakers. Be prepared for the sad portions of the book -- where seven-year-old Itamar is STILL without a friend. He is finally given a puppy to talk to -- the fact that the puppy died is not mentioned in the story. He is bullied by the local children. Be sure your young readers know that despite the lonelines and isolation of his childhood, Itamar grew up to be a journalist like his dad and changed his name to Itamar Ben Avi -- son of my father. The most recent figures available give the number of Hebrew speakers worldwide as nine million. HIstorian Cecil Roth said it best: “Before Ben-Yehuda... Jews could speak Hebrew; after him they did.”

Not just a good book for any child (let's say, ages 5 to 10), who will read it and get something out of it, but the sort of topic that should broaden a child's perspective and understanding of our world. That a language might have no native speakers, yet still be remembered; that a language can be revived and supplemented to bring it back to life; that it might take a single-minded dedication to do such a thing; that a child growing up as a sole native-speaker of this language might have great difficulties, and be something of a misfit, until it finally "catches on"... Any child who is learning even a few words of Hebrew should certainly know all this, and here's a great book to accomplish just that.

Based on a true story, Eliezer wants his son, Ben-Zion, to speak only Hebrew. He even covers his ears when animals make noises because they are not part of "the Language of Angels."The first obstacle? Hebrew hadn't been spoken as a main language in over 2000 years. The second obstacle? Ben-Zion is lonely without a way to communicate with other kids. Eliezer begins to teach them Hebrew, too, for his son's sake and also with the hope that they will teach their parents. The third obstacle? There were no Hebrew words to describe modern objects. The children take part in inventing new words for the "milon" ("a place for words" where Eliezer began recording every Hebrew word). This incredible story is told in a way children can understand with concepts they can relate to, including loneliness and bullying. The beautiful art is a perfect match for the text. I was fascinated by the history behind this book and enjoyed learning more in the Afterword. For instance, when Eliezer moved to Jerusalem in 1881, no one spoke Hebrew (except in prayer). Today, more than three million people speak it—an accomplishment that amazes me!

Amazon Best Sellers Rank:

I noticed that none of Ms. Julie's books have any pictures. That's the only reason she list a star.

Great little book. Can't wait to make avacado ice cream and some of the other desserts. I also ordered the books on spinach and beets.

I wouldn’t eat most of the recipes included.

Good recipes beyond the usual guacamole. I will be using this as soon as avocado season arrives with lots of fruit.

Many good ideas

Good read

I love Avocados especially in salads. But do not like peeling them at all. No salad for me if I have to peel avacodos unless my SweetHeart or one of the 2 daughters peel them. So I bought 3 of them, one for each house so I can enjoy my salad in either house I am. The price is great and they were sent and recieved in a reasonable time period. The price on Amazon.com was very resonable

Avocados are so so popular and these recipes were delicious. It seems we eat avocados with every meal. These were simple and easy to follow. Would recommend to all Avocado Lovers!
