When I first saw this book I kinda glanced over it but then decided to buy it and all I can say is wow. I recommend this book to not just those who are interested in Iran but people going to live in another country or stay awhile or people interested in joining the peace corps. The book is about a girl for the USA joining the peace corps and being sent to Iran. She talks about the struggle to learn Farsi or Persian, and how it was difficult for her and how she had to adapt to diffrent social customs while being aggravated at things that may seem minor there or even here but could be important there. Having a disruption within her own group, having to learn to say goodbye to friends or people who lived with her and greeting new ones. Having to manage relationships in a way that where seen as taboo and certain views of sexism and this was before the Iranian revolution. She also had to adapt to the diffrent types of food, while this book is about a girl living in Iran for awhile, the book wasn't depressing, I didn't feel like it was trying to tackle certain issues and the book was quite funny at times. I think many people could realate to this book one way or another. Have you ever moved to a new country, a diffrent state, or a diffrent town? I really recommend this book to anyone.

I too, like the writer, thought about joining the Peace Corp. back in the 60s but for various reasons didn't. Now ,after reading Mary Danna Marks' finely crafted memoir, I am truly sorry that I lost that experience but reading her book was the next best thing.Imagine fresh faced, long-limbed Mary- looking like the poster child representing the "All American young woman of the 60s". Follow her as she meanders through the market place towering head and shoulders over the crowd of chador-cloaked women. What does this straight forward American girl do when she finds herself living in the walled off little town of Kerman, ready to teach English to the High School girls, ready to spread the "American Way, only to find that she is also walled of from even doing this.Find out that the answer to all problems in this small conservative community in Iran is to serve tea, and plenty of it.Can you imagine seeing "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" dubbed in Farsi?Or Try to picture when Betsy, Mary's first roommate, paints the bedroom a deep electric blue and it causes Mary to feel like she is sleeping at the bottom of a watery well every night.Or try to picture Mary's second roommate, a feisty 60 year old trying to buy an eggbeater in the market place and because she doesn't know the language, has to become that eggbeater, whirring and spinning arms and legs for all the market to see.The best parts are the humorous attempts of Mary and her roommate to put on a musical show using the young Iranian girls in their classes or when Mary find herself the hit of the party of Iranian and American bigwigs and starts giving lessons in "Twisting" and "Jitterbugging."Meet the Rubbish Lady of the Water Pump. Meet Mr. Sayeed-Nejad, friend and mentor to Mary. Meet the men and women of this dusty plateau and grow to love them as Mary does.

Must reading for anyone who has ever lived in or dreamt about living in a foreign country. Mary Dana Marks beautifully portrays strangeness, adjustment, and eventually love. I couldn't put it down.

Great insights in the lives of PeaceCorps volunteers and the culture of Iran

Walled In, Walled Out: A Young American Woman In Iran by Mary Dana Marks. Peace Corps Writers. 336 p. Illus. $16.00. Available through Amazon.com Sent by Peace Corps to the socially conservative Iranian city of Kerman in the early 1960s, Mary Marks arrived when Mohammad Reza Pahlavi was the Shah and absolute leader of the country. This poignant, informative and often humorous memoir, draws readers into the culture of chador-draped women, through the intricacies of the Farsi language and offers tantalizing descriptions of what’s available in the open-aired bazaars of a vast land. Fesenjan, a tangy Iranian stew made with pomegranate-walnut sauce, was one of the many dishes the author learned to love as she gradually became assimilated within the folds of Persian culture and taught English in a girls’ high school. Although Ms. Marks’ story primarily occurred in Kerman, her travels also took her from the Persian Gulf to the Caspian Sea. One of the ironies the author came to realize was that as she walked alongside a Baluchi tribesman in colorful dress and turban, her own uncovered head of long hair and pale skin made her the exotic one. She also discovered it was polite to offer someone food three times in order that they be allowed to initially refuse before graciously accepting. When Ms. Marks’ occasionally bumped up against administrative red tape, such as finding a venue for her school’s play, she persevered until she found a way for all involved to be part of the performance’s success. Written in clear, polished language, this story sparkles with descriptions of mouth-watering recipes, innovative classroom activities to poignant asides into her personal life and romances. Walled In, Walled Out is a journey of geography, culture and self-examination that enchants, educates and, like those magic carpets of fable, transports the reader to all the sensory and cultural dimensions of another people in another time and place. Highly recommended!

There is really nothing wrong with this product, and in terms of durability I am quite pleased. My big complaints are in its organization. Month calender's are often awkwardly placed between weeks. Also, the last week of one month was omitted and put as the first week of the next. My other complaint is that, in spite of being quite large, it always seems like there is not enough space to actually write things. Maybe that is more me or being in grad school... but I can't say that I would buy the same product next year.

it didn’t even come first of all. and i don’t know what i do. it’s really frustrating to say the least.

Larger than I thought but boy can this hold a lot of info. Not for taking with you in a purse!

Love it and find it super helpful!

It needs more room

Perfect for the 2018-2019 school year. Less so for the 2019-2020 school year.

Súper!!

This is a great planner for the price. Sturdy and simple.
