This book was all of that and then more!Part prophetic, part romance, part supernatural action. It was like reading Supernatural but with a black cast(in most parts), and should definitely be adapted into film.Alena Ford is going through a painful divorce and in the midst of losing her home, marriage and in the process of losing her daughter, Alena can turn to no one but an old friend and an interesting new friend. Through talking with a mysterious older woman named Gloria, Alena learns she has more gifts and insight than she knows and from there the story takes on magical, spiritual twist that pulls your heart and opens your soul.In a way, we are all Alena Ford and want to know why our culture is so messed up. The entire book reads like a mirror of all that is going on today with police brutality, blacks who act superior to their own and then those who are lost in the “system” or have a “thuggish” mentality, and even addresses some colorism issues-all while using storytelling/fictional devices. Wonderful!I hear there is a sequel on the way and I am ready for it!

"A Fistful of Honey" by Malena Crawford is an intriguing book, with a great deal of challenge and power. As the story begins, the protagonist Alena is struggling with a very typical set of life challenges. Her husband has deserted her; she discovers that their ritzy home in NYC is under foreclosure; and she simultaneously loses her job as a result of refusing to succumb to the improper advances of her boss (the senior partner of the law firm in which she's a junior partner). Forced by these circumstances to move to an apartment in a less-than-satisfactory part of the city with her ten-year-old daughter Maya, things go from bad to worse. Although she has the help of her friend Michael, and an older neighbor woman, Gloria, Alena undergoes a major crisis when she is mugged one evening outside her apartment. She ends up in the hospital, and this gives her unfaithful and devious husband Gabe just the opening he needs to take over custody of their daughter.At this point, though, the story leaps from the mundane to the level of epic fantasy. Alena is comforted by Gloria, who tells her she has a grand destiny (relating to the fact that her name derives from Mary Magdalene of Scriptural fame) and gives her a "Black Madonna" painting. While gazing at the painting, Alena is transported back in time to a former life as a slave on a Southern Plantation. From there, Alena's present life, and her destiny as a "bridger" and a potential avatar for the black race, becomes more complex and spiritually oriented. Whether one reads this book strictly as an exciting fantasy, as a spiritual allegory, or as prophetic truth, it is meaningful and engaging. The author indicates that a sequel is in process, which explains why the story is not fully resolved. It will be interesting to see where it goes from here.

From the first page I was drawn into this story. A mixture of Devine inspiration, old world concepts, and our current day misgivings. Melena's writing propelled me back to my favorite author who wrote openly of some of the same concepts, ancestor, Octavia Butler. I applaud you Melena for your strength in writing with such powerful and visual perception. I look forward to future writings with anticipation.

Alena, broken, lied to felt her life had no meaning other than mother to Maya. Coming from a broken home, enduring atrocities as a child, she fled home when the opportunity arose. In doing this she led an untrue life. Marriage broken, deceit, it had all become malevolent and unholy!Having to leave a lifestyle she'd become accustomed to Alena and Maya move to what was looked upon as an unsafe neighborhood.Here is where she meets Gloria, and things from Alena's past come to life spiritually, mentally and physically.Here is when a battle is forged, but who, or what wins?

This book is a balm for the Black woman's soul. I love it but. This author is flawed. Her mystic aspects are wonderful but shortsighted and incomplete.She does not like Interracial relationships as stated by Gabriel character. She goes out of her way to make him twisted ,which he is but thier is no closure for him. She stereotypical cast white man as evil, yet is blase about her mistreatment at the hands of a fellow black man and brushes it off as evil clouding thier judgement, even letting Mike her friend swoop in despite breaking up his marriage. Seriously Lola(Mike's wife)has nothing to say here, I find that hard to believe. Her depiction of heaven do the exact same thing white people have putting themselves as the master race a heaven full of majority Black People. She talk diversity but in her vision quest it doesn't exist. All other races expect for whites don't show up at all in this book. I also dislike the good vs evil trope it is fiction that is not clean cut. This book is beautiful but so imperfect and full of a few biases itself

I am so glad I picked this book. The main character. Galena helped me to remember that I am the child of the most high created in the image of. God. I have the power within to fight off those who seek to keep me from fulfilling my destiny. This book is just the reminder I need at this moment in my life.This is a must read, especially for black women. Do yourself a huge favor and get this book. You will be taken on a journey of self discovery right along with the main characters. It is arise worth taking.

Read this book with an open mind to fully understand the realm in which the author is writing from. There is an underlying message that can be taken away from the book, passages upon passages of messages of strength, growth and knowledge is given throughout the book. The author has given so much more than what is presented. Know that A Fistful of Honey will be read again and again by me.

This is a must read. If you liked The Shack this is even better. The writing was excellent. Everything was totally believable. This is my new favorite author. There is an apparent sequel however. To write a book of this magnitude, the author is obviously very spiritually anointed with a thought provoking intellect. I highly recommend you read this ASAP.

Like a master chef's kitchen, Bill Buford's journal of his food journey is rich and sensual with flavor and aromas.An established magazine editor and successful author Bill Buford has always been an amateur cook, but in his late forties he decides that living in an ephemeral and materialistic world of slight success, fashion, and fame is not enough for him. He wants to understand the soul of things, and ultimately that means understanding where the food he eats comes from and how it is best prepared, and while at first that means writing a magazine article on Mario Batali, the search ultimately takes him to Italy where he learns to make fresh pasta, butcher pigs and cows, and while falling in love with tradition and heritage also come to see poignantly how they can change and disappear as well.The book swings back and forth between two places. First there's Buford's hometown of New York City, where Mario Batali runs the finest Italian restaurant in America and where Bill Buford has situated himself as a kitchen slave. Then there are the hills of northern Italy where Batali learned the power and allure of true and traditional Italian cooking, and where Buford traveled many times in the search for the essence of food, and the origin of things.Batali's Michelin three-star kitchen is a source of endless conflict, and Buford describes it brilliantly as though the kitchen staff were a ragtag motley platoon of misfits and maniacs caught at war. The hills of Italy, on the other hand, are an endless source of fascination and wonder for Buford, and it is in these sections -- powered by Buford's love -- that are slow and at times ponderous to read.Like a brilliantly prepared Italian dish, "Heat" is full of subtle and sublime flavor, created by the author's wonderful and precise use of detail and food nouns, and while this like good food can activate all our senses and stimulate intoxicating memories it can also be at times too rich and thus at times a bit revolting. (Was an entire chapter on polenta really necessary?)And this book can only be truly appreciated by the true gourmand, as it is so densely packed with culinary terminology and thinking.While Buford's preparation and execution can be a bit much, I did come away learning a lot from this book, lessons that will stay with me for the rest of my life, as I deepen my culinary practice: How simplicity can take a lifetime to master, how a food tastes of its ingredients (case in point is how pasta is defined by the quality of its egg) and of the devotion of its practitioners (it seems that only petite Italian women with very small hands with nothing to do all day but make tortellini can make true tortellini), how meat is defined not by the breed of the animal but by the breeding of the animal (feed a cow real grass, and let it grow strong and big by letting it till the fields and roam the pastures, and you'll have excellent beef), and how food can unite families and define cultures like nothing else (Italians believe they invented food).And so unfortunately with the advent of modernization, technology, and globalization, food culture is slowly being lost to us. Here is an Italian master's poetic and poignant description of what we have lost:"In the seventies, the chianine were good. They tasted of the hillsides and clean air. They ate grass and had acres to roam in, and, because they were work animals, they were exercised constantly. The meat was firm and pure. It might take two weeks before it softened up. Today, the chianine do not have hillsides to roam in, because you use a tractor to work vines, not an animal. And instead of grass, they eat cereals, grains, and protein pellets: mush. They eat mush. They taste of mush. And after the animal is slaughtered, the meat behaves like mush: it disintegrates in days. A chianina is a thing to flee from!"

This is an accomplished piece of writing and I enjoyed reading it very much. The author is evocative of Bill Bryson in his witty self-deprecating manner and the wonderful way in which he weaves together history and humor. What surprised me, however, was that the author is an experienced professional editor, as there were too many (unnecessary!) parentheticals, which significantly disturbed the flow of the narrative. Particularly towards the end he became enamored with certain words, such as "evanescent," as though he had tired of attempting to vary his vocabulary, which was considerably rich and varied throughout the book. His character sketches and descriptions of the people he worked alongside are exquisite.Only a very small sliver of the population can afford to work for many months for free, to shuttle back and forth between New York and Italy while maintaining a New York City apartment, and dine regularly on the very best hand-made, small-batch, "slow" food. It's one thing to illuminate those artisans, such as those of Northern Italy the author had spent time with, who are keeping old traditions alive. It's another thing altogether to expect that large-scale, factory-made food is going anywhere soon. With more and more people to feed, and more and more of them demanding increased quantities of meat, the privileges enjoyed by the Bill Bufords of this world will continue to be an extreme rarity, even as it serves to inspire the rest of us to care a bit more about our traditions, the food we eat, and how we prepare it.

I LOVE this calendar and buy it every year!!!! I love the great photos and the adorable saying each month.

This calendar was a gift for my mother, who is an avid horse-lover. She pins her calendar below her kitchen clock, so she can write down and remember important dates. She enjoys the pictures as well as the thought provoking writings about what horses can teach us.

I bought this for my young Grand daughter to help her learn about weeks and months. She adores the photos and is understanding the concepts of the measurements of time.
