This book was all of that and then more!Part prophetic, part romance, part supernatural action. It was like reading Supernatural but with a black cast(in most parts), and should definitely be adapted into film.Alena Ford is going through a painful divorce and in the midst of losing her home, marriage and in the process of losing her daughter, Alena can turn to no one but an old friend and an interesting new friend. Through talking with a mysterious older woman named Gloria, Alena learns she has more gifts and insight than she knows and from there the story takes on magical, spiritual twist that pulls your heart and opens your soul.In a way, we are all Alena Ford and want to know why our culture is so messed up. The entire book reads like a mirror of all that is going on today with police brutality, blacks who act superior to their own and then those who are lost in the “system†or have a “thuggish†mentality, and even addresses some colorism issues-all while using storytelling/fictional devices. Wonderful!I hear there is a sequel on the way and I am ready for it!
"A Fistful of Honey" by Malena Crawford is an intriguing book, with a great deal of challenge and power. As the story begins, the protagonist Alena is struggling with a very typical set of life challenges. Her husband has deserted her; she discovers that their ritzy home in NYC is under foreclosure; and she simultaneously loses her job as a result of refusing to succumb to the improper advances of her boss (the senior partner of the law firm in which she's a junior partner). Forced by these circumstances to move to an apartment in a less-than-satisfactory part of the city with her ten-year-old daughter Maya, things go from bad to worse. Although she has the help of her friend Michael, and an older neighbor woman, Gloria, Alena undergoes a major crisis when she is mugged one evening outside her apartment. She ends up in the hospital, and this gives her unfaithful and devious husband Gabe just the opening he needs to take over custody of their daughter.At this point, though, the story leaps from the mundane to the level of epic fantasy. Alena is comforted by Gloria, who tells her she has a grand destiny (relating to the fact that her name derives from Mary Magdalene of Scriptural fame) and gives her a "Black Madonna" painting. While gazing at the painting, Alena is transported back in time to a former life as a slave on a Southern Plantation. From there, Alena's present life, and her destiny as a "bridger" and a potential avatar for the black race, becomes more complex and spiritually oriented. Whether one reads this book strictly as an exciting fantasy, as a spiritual allegory, or as prophetic truth, it is meaningful and engaging. The author indicates that a sequel is in process, which explains why the story is not fully resolved. It will be interesting to see where it goes from here.
From the first page I was drawn into this story. A mixture of Devine inspiration, old world concepts, and our current day misgivings. Melena's writing propelled me back to my favorite author who wrote openly of some of the same concepts, ancestor, Octavia Butler. I applaud you Melena for your strength in writing with such powerful and visual perception. I look forward to future writings with anticipation.
Alena, broken, lied to felt her life had no meaning other than mother to Maya. Coming from a broken home, enduring atrocities as a child, she fled home when the opportunity arose. In doing this she led an untrue life. Marriage broken, deceit, it had all become malevolent and unholy!Having to leave a lifestyle she'd become accustomed to Alena and Maya move to what was looked upon as an unsafe neighborhood.Here is where she meets Gloria, and things from Alena's past come to life spiritually, mentally and physically.Here is when a battle is forged, but who, or what wins?
This book is a balm for the Black woman's soul. I love it but. This author is flawed. Her mystic aspects are wonderful but shortsighted and incomplete.She does not like Interracial relationships as stated by Gabriel character. She goes out of her way to make him twisted ,which he is but thier is no closure for him. She stereotypical cast white man as evil, yet is blase about her mistreatment at the hands of a fellow black man and brushes it off as evil clouding thier judgement, even letting Mike her friend swoop in despite breaking up his marriage. Seriously Lola(Mike's wife)has nothing to say here, I find that hard to believe. Her depiction of heaven do the exact same thing white people have putting themselves as the master race a heaven full of majority Black People. She talk diversity but in her vision quest it doesn't exist. All other races expect for whites don't show up at all in this book. I also dislike the good vs evil trope it is fiction that is not clean cut. This book is beautiful but so imperfect and full of a few biases itself
I am so glad I picked this book. The main character. Galena helped me to remember that I am the child of the most high created in the image of. God. I have the power within to fight off those who seek to keep me from fulfilling my destiny. This book is just the reminder I need at this moment in my life.This is a must read, especially for black women. Do yourself a huge favor and get this book. You will be taken on a journey of self discovery right along with the main characters. It is arise worth taking.
Read this book with an open mind to fully understand the realm in which the author is writing from. There is an underlying message that can be taken away from the book, passages upon passages of messages of strength, growth and knowledge is given throughout the book. The author has given so much more than what is presented. Know that A Fistful of Honey will be read again and again by me.
This is a must read. If you liked The Shack this is even better. The writing was excellent. Everything was totally believable. This is my new favorite author. There is an apparent sequel however. To write a book of this magnitude, the author is obviously very spiritually anointed with a thought provoking intellect. I highly recommend you read this ASAP.
