The author covers a wide variety of healing modalities in her book. Most I was familiar with, but I like how the book is organized, explaining step by step what she went through to find healing. I was especially happy to see her cover Hulda Clark's material on getting rid of parasites. Hulda has a few amazing books out on how the immune system is damaged, and how to fix it in "A Cure for all disease", "A Cure for Aids" and a "Cure for all Cancer".

My #1 health book to go to! Detoxing 'in order' is very important. Tamara St John is the only person I've found who explains, not only the order of detoxing but the 'how to' in plain easy to understand English. I highly recommend Tamara's books and training. She learned by going through it herself.... She's already done the research most of us don't have time for or don't know where to start.

I'm currently reading this book right now and I'm learning so much. This book is heaven sent. It's full of information on how to heal your body. Thank Tamara for sharing all of your knowledge with other. I would recommend this book to friends, family, and anyone who is dealing with health issues.

This is the second book in the series, but I think you could start here if you liked. I'd advise reading the first one, though, since in many ways it was tighter.I really love this universe. Hearne did a great job of pulling together an approach that can potentially include ALL the gods of every pantheon, but restrict their powers here in the Real World. So there's bickering both within and among the pantheons, but the gods can't just fight it out themselves; they have to go through our realm. This suggests an almost infinite number of plots possible, rather as was suggested by some episodes of Xena, but Hearne follows up much better!The characterizations of the gods are interesting. They don't meet my personal interpretations... but why should they? I think it's funny that Thor, for example, seems to be disliked by everyone he's ever met, across various pantheons! It's both a running joke and, apparently, a significant part of another book in the series.Similarly the witches. There are various "brands". Atticus, our protagonist, doesn't much care for any of them, but in this book has dealings with 3 varieties, two of which might be allies.The snark was powerful here- sometimes to good effect, but sometimes it got tedious. The banter with his dog, for example, is best when the dog is focused on a very canine view of the world, and less compelling when the dog makes Star Wars references. I have a dog, and even if you ramped up her intellect a lot, she would care nothing for movies! However, the intense focus on things like sausages, walks/runs, and bitches in heat is pretty plausible!The plot was fine. There were coincidences that were very useful, sure, but I think they were woven into the overall plot well enough to pass muster. There were also teasers for potential plot arcs in later books.All in all, I didn't like it quite as much as #1, but I did enjoy it enough to look forward to starting #3.

I'm not an especially big fan of urban fantasy, but the premise of the first book in this series was interesting enough to draw me in and I liked it enough to give this second book a try. I didn't like it quite as much as book one, but I'll probably try at least one more book in the series. I think the part I liked the most was the dialog between Atticus and Oberon, his pooch. The part I didn't like was that Atticus, who has lived hundreds of years by keeping in the shadows, suddenly seems to want to shine brightly. That seems odd to me and not in character, unless there's an explanation for this that I somehow missed.

I have to say that The Iron Druid Chronicles are growing on me. When I read the first book in the series I was a bit taken by surprise by how immature O’Sullivan was behaving given that he was supposed to be an over two millenia old druid. This and a few other things put me off a bit when reading the first book.However, I thought the book was definitely good enough for me to give one more instalment a go and so, here we are. I have read Hexed which is the second book in the series. The somewhat “boyish” behaviour of O’Sullivan is no longer a surprise so it doesn’t really disturb me as much as in the first book. His rather care-free gung-ho attitude can actually be rather fun at times.I have also grown accustomed to his conversations with his Irish Wolfhound which are fairly ridiculous if you give yourself time to think about it but are also really funny if you try not to be to serious about it. We are talking about a fantasy novel after all. But I guess a dog not only using words to communicate but words like discombobulating (I had to look that one up) might not be to the liking of everyone.One thing that I like, and which I liked already in the first book, is that the main character is not only likable but a very positive person not running around doing a bunch of self-loathing and feeling sorry for himself. Even when he suffers quite a bit of a down-event in the book he keeps his spirit and is more interested in kicking some serious behind rather than go around harping about how he could have done things differently.Our friends from the first book are back of course and his new apprentice, the neighbouring widow as well as O’Sullivans lawyers are as likable as always. I’m even starting to like the local witch coven. The various Irish gods are of course back as well although they kind of wiggle around being likable and not so likable. And of course there are a few new acquaintances on the definitely-not-likable side.There are plenty of action in the book as well. Witches, hexes, golems and demons are thrown around fairly liberally. The story is rather simple but works quite well for this kind of book. Most of it is concentrated on the main plot of the book which has a clear beginning, middle and end which I like. Sure there are few threads that continues from the first book and will continue in the next one(s) as well but it is a book with a clear conclusion which does not leave you with any “oh no” cliffhangers at the end of the book.On the whole I would say that I found this book quite entertaining and I did not hesitate to put the next one on my to-read shelf after having finished this one.

It's always hard to follow up the first novel, this second novel is better than the first. We already know most of the characters from the previous, and it's quite a story. Atticus faces three challenges in this, and none of them are by his choice, he has unwanted visitors that can kill him, but Oberon is always by his side providing humour. There have been complaints about the women, mainly goddesses, that are weak. These are not weak women, they each have their own agenda using Atticus as a pawn and he really doesn't have a lot of choice in their game against each other. The only choice he has is to protect himself as much as he can and sometimes threatening, then resolving a situation to both parties satisfaction is the only way to get out without making an enemy.

I enjoyed this book. It was a pretty quick read, but I found it to be well written and interesting. Struggle with addiction is an issue many people face. Rich Roll was able to turn his life around and find his self-worth again. Maybe at times the book focused on his plant based diet a little too much, but he sees this as one of the main contributing factors to his success. Overall, I think he's an amazing athlete who had to overcome a lot to get where he is today. I respect him for that. As for the people saying that his eatting habits have no basis? I for one can't say he's doing it wrong, the results speak for themselves. The Epic5 is hardcore! Amazing that they pulled it off.

Part of the reason for my meh review of “Finding Ultra” isn’t so much the book itself but my expectations going in. Based on the title, I was expecting it to be more about ultra running. Furthermore, I expected Roll to describe how he went from being a sedentary out-of-shape 40 year old to an endurance athlete. First, he’s not an ultra runner, he’s an Ironman triathlete. But the bulk of “Finding Ultra” is about a challenge Roll and a friend came up with to complete an Ironman on five different Hawaiian islands in five days. I think Roll’s impulses are pure. He had some dark days of alcoholism in his twenties, which he shares with the reader. He wants to inspire people by demonstrating what he’s overcome. But right away (even as a white male) I was bugged by the strong whiff of white male privilege in “Finding Ultra.” Roll’s grandfather was a champion swimmer at Michigan, Roll’s father was an attorney, they summered at the family vacation cottage, Roll went to an elite prep school and then had to make the difficult choice of attending Harvard or Stanford. (He was sure to list all the top colleges he got into.) The whole vibe of this book was basically the opposite of the true ultra vibe, which is humility. Roll isn’t even humble-bragging but pretty much just flat out boasting. All of Roll’s stuff about the merits of the plant-based diet and how cut he is start to sound like sermonizing or an infomercial, like he’s trying to sell the reader something (which I think he might be; I didn’t get far enough in the appendixes to find out). After his rough spell with drinking, which—granted—landed him in a drying out facility, Roll meets his super-hot yoga teacher wife, practices law, and they build their dream house in the California hills. Yes, more challenges, poor guy. I don’t want to take anything away from the author; I think his work ethic is enviable. Roll pushes himself harder in every aspect of his life than anyone I know and deserves everything he’s earned. Yet he’s somehow hard to respect, because for the most part his adversity has been self-created. It’s not like he was some poor kid from the projects who started running. He was a bored corporate attorney who decided to do triathlons. There are probably a hundred of those in every major city. I get that alcoholism is a disease, and Roll was definitely an alcoholic. That’s the truest and most meaningful section of the book. Yet I’m even skeptical about why it’s included in “Finding Ultra.” The drinking happened when Roll was in his late twenties or early thirties, well before his actual decision to change his life and become a triathlete. I think it actually might just be inserted to counter the argument that here’s another white guy who’s been given every advantage and has to create challenges to keep himself from getting bored. Yeah, cynical of me to think that, I know. But Roll and his buddy very literally create the challenge I mentioned earlier of Ironmanning around Hawaii. If you’re going to make up your own challenge, it may as well be in paradise, right? Spoiler alert here, but the sad or funny thing, depending on your perspective, is that they failed. They couldn’t do the 5 triathlons in 5 days. It took them 7 to complete. Yeah, this would kill me if I even tried it, but let’s remember it’s a self-made boys’ adventure in Hawaii. How many people even have the time or money to train for such a thing? I couldn’t even afford all the plane tickets. And Roll spends like 200 pages giving us the play-by-play of this challenge. I now know more about bicycling saddle sores than I ever wanted to.

This certainly is one of those books you pick up intending to read 10 pages and next thing you’ve read 200 without moving. Rich is not only an exceptional wordsmith and storyteller but the story itself is riveting.I just turned 30 and I actually heard about Rich 5 years ago somehow when i was living in Los Angeles shortly after MY dui. I totally understand those feelings of hating to admit there’s a problem, hating going to AA meetings knowing you need your card signed (not me, these people have a problem but not me). Funny enough when he talked about immediately going back to drinking after the DUI..the day after I got out of the drunk tank I went to get gas and had an open 12 pack in the passenger seat, 1 open in the cup holder, I had very much been drinking, and I LOCKED MY KEYS IN THE CAR. At the gas station minutes from the jail I just left. There was no denying this one. I was a damn fool and I knew this was it. I called a towing company, waiting in panic for the guy to arrive. He unlocked the car, no questions asked, and left. That was God saying “last favor buddy. Get your life together”And I did, for the most part. Rich went to the 109 day rehab (loved lighting the inventory on fire by the way) and I went to Hoffman, a retreat in Napa.Flash forward 5 years, I have moved to Gaithersburg (15 mins north of Bethesda) met the love of my life (after also being cheated on but not days after a marriage! Man that was brutal) anyway lots of parallels. And throughout the years I would always come across Rich’s Before and after, it’s always been this temporary motivator and truly an incredible before and after but I still ate and drank and continued to be an alcoholic. Last February my then fiancé was diagnosed with MS and despite both being gluten, dairy loving fiends at the time we discovered if we wanted to beat this Illness it was going to have to be through food and supplements. So we started on a program called the wahls protocol, which overall helped enormously, my wife Hope’s condition growing to borderline progressive right before the wedding and then being nearly symptom free for the last several months.The Wahls program was much like Rich’s eating program, lots of veggies but also lots of meat, particularly organ meats. We made the switch to strictly plant based about a month ago and the changes have been remarkable. Her hair stopped falling out. We both felt light and relaxed, anxiety levels at an all time low.We then spent this week after her dance recital gorging on junk food and alcohol (okay, much more me than her) and yesterday, massively hungover, I bought this book and sat down to read it. And I was immersed in Rich’s journey, inspired by his persistent self doubt, his frequent setbacks, and his amazing tenacity. I also found it incredible that within a year of working very hard and visualizing his dreams of being a great swimmer, he became that at age 16. I loved that he couldn’t complete his first race in his 40s despite being a vegan that trained hard because he took the time to reassess and start anew, and those were some of the biggest takeaways for me in this book. Persistence amidst self doubt and failure. Burning to the ground and starting anew. The power of humility. And how possible massive transformation really is.Personally I am currently at the part in Rich’s journey where he’s at the breakfast table mumbling about doing a juice fast. Getting back on the wagon and going full throttle, plant based.Hope and I also bought two of Rich and Julia’s cookbooks and the recipes are AMAZING, but I got burnt out. A lot of the really good ones take many hours to make, and we both work 80-90 hour weeks. I hope they consider making a recipe book for quick on the go fuelings.But man, what a book. Gonna check out his podcast next. I’m a fan! And was fascinated by the many parallels. Thanks for sharing your story Rich.

Audio book review: After some of the negative reviews I held off on listening to this for years. I was missing out on so much inspiration! His story is unique and personal and our lives and struggles are very different but you will find something in it that resonates with you. I just absolutely loved his voice, he read his book so well, I felt like I was there on the road, in the water all the way along.Now I am exploring his podcasts with amazing interviewees he invited as I struggle in the right direction to be the best version of myself.Absolutely worth the listen, even for the non-athlete .

I recently got this book after stumbling upon Rich’s podcast and I read it in one afternoon. I found his story so compelling and inspiring, and the book both easy to read and hard to put down. I probably identify because I’m turning 40 next month, but he is definitely super inspiring and a must read (and his podcast a must listen) for anyone interested in health, wellness and longevity. I also started running again and signed up for an 8k when I finished this book. I don’t know if that’s the standard reaction but I’ll take it!

Stephen Um (PhD, University of St. Andrews) serves as the senior minister of Citylife Church in Boston, Massachusetts. He also serves as a council member for the Gospel Coalition. Stephen lives in Boston, Massachusetts, with his wife, Kathleen, and their three daughters.R. Kent Hughes (DMin, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School) is senior pastor emeritus of College Church in Wheaton, Illinois, and professor of practical theology at Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Hughes is also a founder of the Charles Simeon Trust, which conducts expository preaching conferences throughout North America and worldwide. Solid doctrine overall but not the most exigitical. I prefer a mix between commentary / application and in depth study and this book spends a lot more time on commentating then it does tackling the interpretation of the passages. This is the first book in this commentary that has disappointed me in that regard. The author is a solid pastor but I think he should have spent more time pressing into textual difficulties. The commentary on second Corinthians is a different author and I’m hoping it’s more in line with the other books in the series.

Everyone should read this commentary but especially if you are in a church that is suffering division and bitterness. Paul didn't pull any punches with this church with problems. Um, like all of the writers I have read who are in the Kent Hughes series, is concise current.

This book captured the essence of what Paul wanted to reach about Church community. It is what our church needs today.

Um this is good!

The Preaching the Word commentary series, published by Crossway, has labeled itself as the commentary "written by pastors for pastors, as well as for all who teach or study God’s Word." I fall into the “all who teach or study God’s Word” category and will review from this perspective. 1 Corinthians: The Word of the Cross by Stephen T. Um is a commentary that is very readable and anyone who is a student of God’s Word will find it highly accessible, providing a clear exposition of a book that covers all sorts of difficulties in the Corinthian church.The Preaching the Word commentary series recently went through a revision and the copy that I am reviewing is the new revision. I am not familiar with the old so I cannot compare the two, but I will attempt to communicate the layout and look of this edition. Ascetically speaking the commentary is very simple, a white dust jacket with minimal design, but it looks nice and stands out on a shelf filled with mostly colorful commentaries. Once, inside the reader will find a table of contents, showing the titles for each chapter, as this is how the commentary is divided. One thing I did notice is the lack of a thorough introduction to the book. Most commentaries will give an introduction to the book, providing the layout of the book, the authorship, a historical introduction, etc. This commentary does not provide that. Instead it opts to go straight to the exposition of the text. I understand that the focus and intent of this commentary is to dive right in to the exposition, but it still would have been nice to see a brief, couple of pages of introduction.Stephen Um does provide a helpful introduction/comparison of the problems in Corinth and our modern-day setting. He states, "on the whole 1 Corinthians presents us with an original context that looks strikingly like our modern-day setting. Here we meet a church that faces issues much like the ones we face. How are we to handle disagreements among God's people? What does a Christian sexual ethic look like when promiscuity is the cultural norm? In what ways does the gospel shape the institution of marriage? How should we relate to the cultural customs and practices of those with whom we disagree on matters of faith? How can the gospel tear down barriers that we have built between others and ourselves?" Um is helpful as he works through all of these questions, providing an understanding of the original context and making helpful application along the way.I love his treatment of the tone of Paul at the outset of the epistle. It has always been amazing to me that Paul starts the letter gently, when he knew all of the issues that he was about to address. Um picks up on this and says, "Note that he is making an 'appeal.' In other words, he doesn't begin with a demand, nor does he ignore the reality of the disunity in the church. He is operating by the gospel principle of speaking the truth in love. To leave them in their broken estate by ignoring the issue would be unloving, so he must speak the truth. But on the other hand, to crush them in their broken estate by coming with a heavy hand would be out of step with the truth of the gospel, so he must speak in love." This is a wise observation and one that will always be a helpful reminder to anyone who counsels others in the church. Speaking the truth in love is a delicate balance, but one that we should strive towards.I found Um to be thought provoking and helpful throughout this commentary. He was especially helpful for me in seeing how to craft some of these difficult passages of Scripture into clear sermons that provide the reader/hearer with plenty of background information, the context that Paul is writing to, and helpful application for the church today. When you ask people what book of the Bibles looks like a page from the current culture. Most Christians would say 1 Corinthians. In fact, it is one of the Apostle Paul's most famous letters to the church during the New Testament time. Many Christians get a lot of verses from 1 Corinthians to apply to their Christian walk. However, there a few Christians that will not read the entire book because of how uncomfortable some of the things Paul writes can be. The Apostle addresses church discipline, where Christians who are in churches that do not practice it, can dismiss it as judgmental. The book also addresses marriage which is a much needed topic in our culture. Many commentaries have for 1 Corinthians has been written over the years. There have many sermon series on it as well. Stephen Um has taken upon himself the task to write on a commentary on Paul's first letter to the Corinthian church. This commentary goes into great detail on why the book was written and even uses illustrations to make the point become clear. Um does not back away from the historical and cultural context that 1 Corinthians was written in. He does each issue that Paul addressed in his letter and what it means for the Christian today. Um talks about unity within the church and how the gospel brings about that unity. He goes to talk about sexual sin, which seems to be one of the hot topics in today's church. Yes, he does address marriage and singleness as well idolatry and issues of worship within the church. Reviewing a commentary is no easy task especially reading one. However, I really enjoyed reading Stephen Um's commentary on 1 Corinthians and highly recommend it to all pastors and teachers. If you are studying the Bible on your own or with a group of friends, this commentary on 1 Corinthians will be a helpful tool.
