Stephen Um (PhD, University of St. Andrews) serves as the senior minister of Citylife Church in Boston, Massachusetts. He also serves as a council member for the Gospel Coalition. Stephen lives in Boston, Massachusetts, with his wife, Kathleen, and their three daughters.R. Kent Hughes (DMin, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School) is senior pastor emeritus of College Church in Wheaton, Illinois, and professor of practical theology at Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Hughes is also a founder of the Charles Simeon Trust, which conducts expository preaching conferences throughout North America and worldwide. He serves as the series editor for the Preaching the Word commentary series and is the author or coauthor of many books. He and his wife, Barbara, live in Wyncote, Pennsylvania, and have four children and an ever-increasing number of grandchildren.

Solid doctrine overall but not the most exigitical. I prefer a mix between commentary / application and in depth study and this book spends a lot more time on commentating then it does tackling the interpretation of the passages. This is the first book in this commentary that has disappointed me in that regard. The author is a solid pastor but I think he should have spent more time pressing into textual difficulties. The commentary on second Corinthians is a different author and I’m hoping it’s more in line with the other books in the series.
Everyone should read this commentary but especially if you are in a church that is suffering division and bitterness. Paul didn't pull any punches with this church with problems. Um, like all of the writers I have read who are in the Kent Hughes series, is concise current.
This book captured the essence of what Paul wanted to reach about Church community. It is what our church needs today.

The Preaching the Word commentary series, published by Crossway, has labeled itself as the commentary "written by pastors for pastors, as well as for all who teach or study God’s Word." I fall into the “all who teach or study God’s Word†category and will review from this perspective. 1 Corinthians: The Word of the Cross by Stephen T. Um is a commentary that is very readable and anyone who is a student of God’s Word will find it highly accessible, providing a clear exposition of a book that covers all sorts of difficulties in the Corinthian church.The Preaching the Word commentary series recently went through a revision and the copy that I am reviewing is the new revision. I am not familiar with the old so I cannot compare the two, but I will attempt to communicate the layout and look of this edition. Ascetically speaking the commentary is very simple, a white dust jacket with minimal design, but it looks nice and stands out on a shelf filled with mostly colorful commentaries. Once, inside the reader will find a table of contents, showing the titles for each chapter, as this is how the commentary is divided. One thing I did notice is the lack of a thorough introduction to the book. Most commentaries will give an introduction to the book, providing the layout of the book, the authorship, a historical introduction, etc. This commentary does not provide that. Instead it opts to go straight to the exposition of the text. I understand that the focus and intent of this commentary is to dive right in to the exposition, but it still would have been nice to see a brief, couple of pages of introduction.Stephen Um does provide a helpful introduction/comparison of the problems in Corinth and our modern-day setting. He states, "on the whole 1 Corinthians presents us with an original context that looks strikingly like our modern-day setting. Here we meet a church that faces issues much like the ones we face. How are we to handle disagreements among God's people? What does a Christian sexual ethic look like when promiscuity is the cultural norm? In what ways does the gospel shape the institution of marriage? How should we relate to the cultural customs and practices of those with whom we disagree on matters of faith? How can the gospel tear down barriers that we have built between others and ourselves?" Um is helpful as he works through all of these questions, providing an understanding of the original context and making helpful application along the way.I love his treatment of the tone of Paul at the outset of the epistle. It has always been amazing to me that Paul starts the letter gently, when he knew all of the issues that he was about to address. Um picks up on this and says, "Note that he is making an 'appeal.' In other words, he doesn't begin with a demand, nor does he ignore the reality of the disunity in the church. He is operating by the gospel principle of speaking the truth in love. To leave them in their broken estate by ignoring the issue would be unloving, so he must speak the truth. But on the other hand, to crush them in their broken estate by coming with a heavy hand would be out of step with the truth of the gospel, so he must speak in love." This is a wise observation and one that will always be a helpful reminder to anyone who counsels others in the church. Speaking the truth in love is a delicate balance, but one that we should strive towards.I found Um to be thought provoking and helpful throughout this commentary. He was especially helpful for me in seeing how to craft some of these difficult passages of Scripture into clear sermons that provide the reader/hearer with plenty of background information, the context that Paul is writing to, and helpful application for the church today. When you ask people what book of the Bibles looks like a page from the current culture. Most Christians would say 1 Corinthians. In fact, it is one of the Apostle Paul's most famous letters to the church during the New Testament time. Many Christians get a lot of verses from 1 Corinthians to apply to their Christian walk. However, there a few Christians that will not read the entire book because of how uncomfortable some of the things Paul writes can be. The Apostle addresses church discipline, where Christians who are in churches that do not practice it, can dismiss it as judgmental. The book also addresses marriage which is a much needed topic in our culture. Many commentaries have for 1 Corinthians has been written over the years. There have many sermon series on it as well. Stephen Um has taken upon himself the task to write on a commentary on Paul's first letter to the Corinthian church. This commentary goes into great detail on why the book was written and even uses illustrations to make the point become clear. Um does not back away from the historical and cultural context that 1 Corinthians was written in. He does each issue that Paul addressed in his letter and what it means for the Christian today. Um talks about unity within the church and how the gospel brings about that unity. He goes to talk about sexual sin, which seems to be one of the hot topics in today's church. Yes, he does address marriage and singleness as well idolatry and issues of worship within the church. Reviewing a commentary is no easy task especially reading one. However, I really enjoyed reading Stephen Um's commentary on 1 Corinthians and highly recommend it to all pastors and teachers. If you are studying the Bible on your own or with a group of friends, this commentary on 1 Corinthians will be a helpful tool.
