My son loves Harry Potter and this is a great addition to his collection of books. He loves doing accents and now he can learn the meaning behind the “funny sounding” words like Knickerbokers and Budgies.

Like all of her book this is an approachable and fun book. Who knew there were so many things we were missing? Such a delight and great for any age!

This lovely book is the key to expanding one's vocabulary while laughing & getting delightful insights to the first three Harry Potter books. Hoping Ms. Middleton decides to write a second & third volume to fill us all in on the rest of the Potter-vers. Looking forward to being able to call someone a "numpty" - now I just need the proper meaning.

#55,817 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Full disclosure: professor Chang is preaching to the choir (of which I am a member). This little book is an excellent precis of the principal points of disagreement between two schools of economic thought: neoclassical liberalism and institutionalism. Mr Chang is an institutionalist. He believes that the balanced economies of, say, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Switzerland achieve better outcomes for their participants than their liberal counterparts in the U. S., the U. K., and Chile, for example. He offers on orderly, accessible, reasonable discussion of both positions on 23 economic issues and includes supporting data for his views.I enjoyed reading this book. Although the ideas are complex, Prof. Chang offers them in straightforward, clear prose that doesn't require you to use a dictionary (fluent English readers, that is. I recommend it.

039-Chang-ThingsAnother tremendous economics book. Literally shaking the foundations of the present Weltbild. Splinters of Chang's hammering will forcibly, or at least probably, also hit the present paradigm of economic science. What are the real market forces? Is market economy just a battlefield of grass root forces? Chang throws 23 stones to break the old beliefs in this respect. He asks respect to government power by remarkable quantitative argumentation, but without use of snobbish scientific methods, just using common sense and well related percentages, mostly very convincing. His main trend is that countries and economies with well organized government do better than governments only lightly interfering the market process.Very descriptive are the headings of this book, such as: There is no such thing as a free market, The washing machine has changed the world more than the internet has, Governments can pick winners, We are not smart enough to leave things to the market or Good economic policy does not require good economists. From my nordic standpoint it is flattering and even complimentary that it seems that in all comparisons my tiny country Finland is mentioned among the exemplary models. How persuasive as his argumentation may be, I do not get completely rid of my suspicions and confusions. On one hand Chang praises the role of government regulation: Governments can pick winners, on the other, he gives full credit to market system, if, however, in the spirit of it being the least harmful of all available systems. Communism has clearly shown its merits by ending up to complete failure. Although one of his headings is: Despite the fall of communism, we are still living in planned economies. The next heading is: Equality of opportunity may not be fair and after this: Big government makes people more open to change. As conclusion Chang bravely says his opinion: how to rebuild the world economy. He formulates eight directives or more modestly principles as he says. The first of then is drawn from a word of a surprising big authority, Winston Churchill, paraphrasing just what I already cited above: 'capitalism is the worst economic system except for all the others'. In the light of what we have read it is not surprising that Chang's criticism is of free-market capitalism, and not all kinds of capitalism.Second: we should build our new economic system on the recognition that human rationality is severely limited.Third: while acknowledging that we are not selfless angels, we should build a system that brings out the best, rather than worst, in people.Fourth: we should stop believing that people are always paid what they ‘deserve’.Fifth: we need to take ‘making things’ more seriously.Sixth: we need to strike a better balance between finance and ‘real’ activities.Seventh: government needs to become bigger and more active.Eighth: the world economic system needs to ‘unfairly’ favour developing countries.Who could dispute these? Every one of them is worth pondering and referring to Chang's argumentation throughout the 23 stone hard pieces of text in his book. No way of avoiding full five stars.I myself in front of a completely different present view of the state of my country's economy compared to Chang's am planning to cook up a new utopistic general economic theory. I have decided to base it on only two corner stones: Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations and Keynes's General Theory. Keeping strictly to these two. Being ready to mend and change, if trying to present anything in conflict with these. Now having read Chang's 23 Things, I have decided to ad this book as the third corner stone to my utopy. Three corner stones for an utopistic structure are more than enough, particularly as the structure is ready done, lacking just the start, as says a wisecracking proverb of my homestead Savo.

Ha-Joon brings us a different view of capitalism than what is put forth as generally accepted fact. He points out the fallacies taught and spoken about capitalism that are accepted as truth in our American society. His insightful thought is backed by research and statistics that support his statements. Upon careful reading, most people will substantially agree with many, if not all of his conclusions. He starts off by shooting holes in the idea that the "free market" will solve most of our problems if only we would get regulation out of the way. Possibly a solution if there were such a thing a free market, however as he states a free market is not possible in our world today and therefore any thought that "just let the free market solve the problem" is a pipe-dream does not and cannot work.As he points out, every market is skewed for many reasons, but seldom if ever "free". Two of many examples stand out - In the 1820s there was a political fight to outlaw child labor - the capitalists screaming that the free market of labor would be destroyed and the economic future of England was at stake if restrictions were put on children being allowed to work. It is obvious to us today that working a 7 year old child working 12 hours a day endangered the health an well being of the child as well as the society as a whole. He also points out that a truly free labor market would require free movement of people anywhere in the world as they might choose to fill the needs of labor in various places/countries. A second point among many, is that developing economies (including the beginnings of the United States, notwithstanding Adam Smith) do not grow well without protective tariffs and rules that provide an umbrella of safety for new embryonic enterprises to grow to a size and competence required to compete with developed economies. In more recent times, several managed economies including China, Taiwan, Japan and Singapore to mention a few have out performed the so-called free-market economies by large margins.I highly recommend this book as a read for anyone wanting to gain some balance regarding economic principles in a world filled with loud confusing noise about the direction we need to head in order to navigate through our challenging future.

#1,203 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

The book started out promising, but it was just one big tension between Molly and Ryan. I think Molly is a horrible person. She cries all the time, almost in every chapter. Even though there's mutual feeling of love between her and Ryan... she does everything to avoid a relationship with him because she doesn't want to ruin their friendship. Molly will even go as far as making him jealous by dating someone else but expects Ryan to just sit on the side line and wait around for her and keep pining after her. So, while shes dating another guy, she's still in love with Ryan, so she's stringing both guys along. She's incredibly selfish and I really don't like this character at all.BUT despite the fact that I don't like the characters and the storyline. The author writes beautifully and I do appreciate her style. The storyline flowed and made it easy to read without any plot holes. I may not like this particular book and won't continue with the series, but I am certainly willing to read her other works.

Molly Part One written by Tracy Lorraine is a unique read. If you are not a fan of cliff hangers I strongly suggest buying part two right away so that you can continue the story. Molly is introduced as a young girl at first and you get a glimpse of her parents and how they treated her. While it was not horrible they definitely did not make her feel wanted or needed and that impacts her relationships as she grows up. One night after leaving work unexpectedly early she goes home to make a shocking discovery. It’s then that she ends up at Ryan’s house, one of her best friends. Ryan and Molly’s relationship is pure sexual tension and they both deny it until it becomes unavoidable. When the tension is running high and they’re friends and family start to question their relationship how to Molly and Ryan react? Will Molly stand up to Ryan’s mom for once and all. The story is an interesting and unique one between two friends who are on the verge of more if they can get out of their own comfort zones and make the move. It is told in both Molly and Ryans point of view. The way it rotates depends on what is going on in the story, for the most part its more Mollys point of view. Tracy Lorraine did a fabulous job with the characters and their relationships to one another and in general. You will not regret this story or the ones after.

Molly Part One by Tracy Lorraine is the first in a two part series. It is an interesting story with well-drawn characters. We first meet Molly as a 15 year old girl as we see an example of how she grew up when her indifferent mother can't be bothered to set down a magazine to listen to her. This leaves her feeling unwanted and unloved and greatly impacts her future relationships with men. Her lifelines are her two adoring older brothers and the family next door with their same age twin daughters who are her best friends. In the next chapter, Molly has grown up and is living with a guy. She has made a lot of bad choices with the men she has dated; she reaches out to them to feel wanted but they are only interested in using her. When she comes home early from work one evening, she finds her boyfriend in bed with two women and rather than confront him, she drives to the house of a close friend, Ryan. Molly and Ryan became close friends when, after a heartbreaking tragedy, they both leaned on each other for strength. She moves in with him and their attraction for each other grows, but because of friends and family, they fight their strong attraction for each other. This is where the reader should purchase Molly Part Two to find out what happens next. I enjoyed this book and would recommend it. I received a copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.

Molly by Tracy Lorraine will make you cry and laugh. Molly and Ryan are best friends that suffer through a tragic loss. What they don’t know is that they have feelings for each other. When Molly finds her boyfriend cheating, she goes to Ryan’s new house to wait until he comes home from work. When he gets home and she tells him the whole story. When the anniversary comes around, it is a sad time for them both. Ryan had booked a holiday at the beach and thought it would be a great idea that Molly came with him. As far as best friends go, these two share a bond greater than any. When Molly decides that they should just stay friends because she is afraid of losing the friendship they share. When two of their friends throw a stag party, things get heated between Ryan, Molly and Molly’s boyfriend Adam.Tracy Lorraine is a wonderful and creative writer. She writes from the heart and touches the reader on an emotional level that will have you wondering how she came up with it. Lorraine is fast becoming an extremely talented writer and creative person. She not only writes what she knows or has experienced, either herself or someone else, but from the heart. Molly Part One leaves you wondering and anticipating what will happen in the second part.

Unfortunate that Hacker tried to use mathematics in his criticism of the current mathematics curriculum, because his math errors will distract mathematicians and other "STEM" practitioners from some basic truths. For example:In March of 2008, the National Mathematics Advisory Panel presented its Final Report to the President of the United States and the Secretary of Education:"This Panel, diverse in experience, expertise, and philosophy, agrees broadly that the delivery system in mathematics education -- the system that translates mathematical knowledge into value and ability for the next generation -- is broken and must be fixed."Since that time the "Common Core" math standards have replaced the various state standards that were for the most part derived from standards developed by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM).However, an original goal of the NCTM, that all students should have the opportunity to learn mathematics, became "students will be required to learn mathematics." This requirement works for some students and punishes others. Many of the students who succesfully pass through the school maths gateway will quickly forget the topics they studied. In some cases, it's just as well, since the "mathematics" they are taught will be a collection of manipulative tricks that avoid real math understanding -- like the FOIL pseudo-algorithm for avoiding the binomial theorem.Hacker points out the "myths" and "delusions" that keep our present broken system in place. THE MATH MYTH and Other STEM Delusions presents a detailed argument for alternatives to Algebra as a required school subject for all students. In its place, Hacker suggests a course in "Numeracy" he has taught in the Mathematics Department at Queens College, New York. The topics in his course include data analysis related to political representation, finding numerical patterns that indicate fraud in income tax returns, patterns of consumer purchasing, and other examples of quantitative reasoning. He even shows how to approximate a value for the mathematical constant Pi, using basic arithmetic.Hacker is not "anti-math," and he describes mathematics as a subject of "inherent beauty." However, he does not see this beauty being communicated to the many frustrated students who would like to pursue careers that do not require math. Hacker does not blame math teachers for the unreasonable pressure put on students to grasp the abstractions of what he calls "academic math." Instead, he faults an elite group of experts -- Hacker calls them "the Mandarins" -- who advise on local and national educational policy, including the "Common Core" state standar. The data Hacker cites include high failure rates on school exit exams, statewide proficiency test results, community college remedial math class statistics, and other measures. Although people who have been successful in math class cite their own progress as anecdotal evidence, Hacker claims the facts show that algebra, far from being a pipeline to success, is "...a barrier [that] ends up suppressing opportunities, stifling creativity, and denying society a wealth of varied talents."Naturally, advocates of required STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) education will disagree and point out that Hacker's background is in political science, not mathematics. But this description of school math from a different viewpoint can help readers determine whether we are making educational decisions based on facts or myths. The list of references for each chapter provides a good basis for objective discussion.

As a math teacher myself, I have become very concerned about how much is being required of students at lower and lower grades. What was once a requirement of a seventh grader is now required of a fourth grade student. This book exposes many of the fallacies of our current educational system as it applies to the study of mathematics. I would like to see this book as required reading for all educators, especially those who are responsible for setting statewide curriculum requirements and college entrance requirements.

The Math Myth: And Other STEM Delusions is a must read that challenges almost all of America’s present educational shibboleths: the push for universal standards that stress STEM-ready education in high schools, especially the emphasis on the requirement, in the name of rigor, that all students achieve some degree of abstract mathematics proficiency. Along the way, using data, he excoriates the Common Core (especially its mathematics component) and the overuse of standardized tests to judge both student competency and teacher effectiveness. It was an eye-opener for me, and I recommend it to anyone who has even the slightest degree of interest in education and educational policy. His primary point is that abstract mathematics – proving of theorems in geometry or factoring polynomials in algebra or doing calculus integrals – does not teach skills that most students need. While that fraction of students who do go on into science or advanced engineering might need that level of mathematics, most students, even those who go into technical fields, do not. Instead, the mathematics requirement presently in place in the Common Core functions as an institutional barrier that is, to a great extent, the reason that many students fail to complete high school, or cannot into college, or, given the math requirements at colleges, fail to complete their degrees. It is, in his view, a costly disaster for our society, wasting human capital on an exorbitant scale.Hacker is a social scientist, not a mathematician, and he uses numbers and data and statistics professionally, but he argues that it is actually bad for our society to require abstract mathematical competency of all students – most of whom will never use an iota of it again. One of the more intriguing bits is his demonstration that the SAT and ACT standardized tests (a boon for the companies that supply them) actually discriminate by gender, arguing that the emphasis on speed in the math components of these exams favors males. I am not yet in a position to either accept or reject his argument, but it merits more than a cursory glance. It has, at least, the ring of plausibility. He argues that the national policies toward mathematics education are largely set by what he calls the ‘mandarins,’ a collection of mathematicians (not mathematics teachers), supported by the political punch of slogans like STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) and by large corporations that want to hire STEM-ready graduates, even though they represent only a small fraction of all students.I have long agreed that the current emphasis on high school calculus is misplaced. My preference has been for students to learn statistics. But even here, I got a wake-up call. Hacker argues that the ‘mandarins’ of statistics make the typical statistics course into the same kind of abstract and theoretical enterprise that the calculus people do. Instead, he argues for developing what he calls “Numeracy,” sufficient familiarity with numbers and numerical reasoning to permit intelligent interaction with our complex, modern society.Stephen D. Senturia taught electrical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for 36 years. He now blogs on educational issues at[...] and writes fiction. His first novel, One Man's Purpose: A Novel was published in November, 2015.

I had a copy of the 10th edition, and I was hoping to see something new in this one. I was comparing version 10 to 11, and it's essentially the exact same book (same wording, same problems), but also with some questionable changes. Everything in the 11th edition is EXACTLY the same as the 10th edition, except for one added chapter possibly, I can't quite remember (I can't check now because I returned it). However, if you compare the page count of 11th edition to 10th edition, you'll see that the 10th edition has over 100 pages more than the 11th edition. That's because they took out something like 3 or 4 chapters from the physical book, and put them online to Pearson (at least in the copy that I received). I really don't like this, because I like everything in a physical book, not in a digital subscription that would expire in a year.To the publishers of this book: Can you PLEASE put every single chapter, including all those more advanced Java ones that are digitally on Pearson now, in a physical book?

I have already had part of this book online since my access to myprogramminglab carried over from another language. I found the material difficult to understand and decided to buy the physical book for this upcoming semester since my myprogramminglab access was about to expire any way. I bought this book brand new assuming it had access to myprogramminglab since there is a myprogramming lab associated with this book. I was WRONG. There is no access to myprogramminglab it only provides an access code for the companion website and the code is only good for 1 year (Companion site cost if you don't have it through your book is $24.00). I paid $156.43 already for this new book and I checked with myprogramminglab it will either cost $96.95 with the eText available in the package or $44.95 without the eText functionality. So save your money people and either get a used one and then pay for myprogramming or just go with a digital version. I used the digital copy all last semester and it worked, however personally I prefer books. Considering how much it's now going to cost to get everything I'll need for just this one class, I wish I'd stayed with the online copy.

Exact as the 10th edition

The "loose leaf" is just that -- you'll need to buy a 2" industrial strength binder to but the "book" into. As with many loose leave binders, it's not ideal for turning pages as the slightest misalignment on the rings will tear the thin pages. At 1200+ pages, it's not light and with the binder won't fit easily into any backpack. Now the worse is that it comes with two access codes that give you little more than a headache. Apparently there is no access to the My Programming Lab if your university and/or class is not on board with giving a "courseID". Despite having purchasing this, a half-hour of broken English arguing that I needed to go back to my instructor was more frustrating than learning Java itself. The first impressions aren't great, as it's not used in my coursework as the handouts and modules suffice and the information I was interested in referencing are bizarrely absent from this text.If you must get this text, do yourself a favor and get a used, BOUND copy. You won't use this book past the semester your class, if you last that long.

This is one of the best beginner programming books out there, It will take you from a Rookie to an Advanced Level. I took a few months and went through the book (10th ed, pretty much the same) and got really good at Java programming. You can see Dr. Liang's effort in crafting the book and it is particularly tailored for beginners (no previous experience assumed). I believe students use this as a University Textbook, But this book is for anyone who wants to understand programming (the basics) from First Principles. Take the time to try out each example in the book and you wont regret it. Thanks to Dr. Liang for this amazing gift to the world.

used it for school

good recommend!!!

For a college course. It seemed to help my child understand the material more thoroughly.

I got this from Audible.com last week after I watched Dr. Oz talk about hypnosis and weight loss on his show. I have been listening once a day for about 7 days. Sometimes I listen as I drift off to sleep at night and others I listen while my kids are down for a nap. While I am not sure that I'm actually being hypnotized in the sense that we all think of when we think of hypnosis (zonked out, unaware of the world around you except for his voice etc) I DO believe its working. Actually I KNOW its working. Whether its a placebo effect or not, my willpower when it came to saying no to bad foods went from a 2 to a 9 after 1 session. It was the strangest thing ever! At first I thought I must just be trying to stick with eating right like I attempt to do once a month or so then fall right back into my old ways the second my husband mentions ordering pizza for dinner. But for the entire week I have eaten cleanly...I have craved vegetables I RARELY eat (grilled squash and zucchinni! really!!) as well as grilled chicken and shrimp and brown rice. I eat more slowly and seem to fill up faster and I have turned down many many "bad" foods without really thinking twice about it. I honestly just didn't want them. I am a 29 year old woman, with a 3 and 1 year old, 5'5" and I started this at about 135. I just want to drop about 10 pounds. I have lost a solid 2 since last week. Not bad considering it takes me FOREVER to lose 2 pounds. Hopefully it will continue to come off as easily. When I listen to the program though I do not feel as if I'm under any sort of hypnosis. I am usually laying in my bed and when he tells you to start to relax and really gets into how your whole body should start to relax I do feel a little loopy kind of. But I'm always aware of the a/c kicking on or a dog barking outside. So I never seem to go all the way in. Except when I fall asleep. Maybe I'm not really asleep? But I don't see how I couldn't really be asleep when I'm exhausted, laying in my bed, totally relaxed...I think maybe 1 time I woke up when the very end of the program says "We hope you have enjoyed this Audible." or something like that. But I never woke up when he started counting to 5 at the end and tells you to wake up.Regardless, it has most definitely "retrained" my mind. Now if I could just find one that will retrain my mind into thinking exercise is AWESOME AND EASY!!! haha. I'll be on the lookout for one of those. Its just $5. Try it and see what it does for you. I'm anxious to hear what others have to say about it. This is exactly what I needed in my life to help me drop 10 pounds. I have always said "If I could just have the willpower to say NO to the bad foods I crave all the time, I'd be fine!". I work out. I eat right the rest of the time. Its just those take out nights that really do me in. Hopefully, not as much anymore! I know I will still give in every once in awhile. But this has most definitely upped my willpower SO much!!!!

After success with hypnosis for Nail Biting, I decided to give the weight loss program a go. Once again - I've had positive results and I'm truly excited with the progress I've made. I've cut snacking down significantly, and I even find myself making more time for exercise.Subtle, and ultimately very important, changes have seem to taken over my body & mind since listening to the hypnosis audio every night for 2 weeks straight. Every time I step on the scale I see proof!

Seems to be working give it a try

I absolutely loved this cd. every time I go to eat I think about it and don't. I feel that it is working, had ten lbs to lose and that done. also feel very relaxed

The Magic of Reality: How We Know What's Really True, by Richard Dawkins

Review

"Exhilarating. The clearest and most beautifully written introduction to science I've ever read. Again and again I found myself saying "Oh! So that's how genes work!" (or stars, or tectonic plates, or all the other things he explains). Explanations I thought I knew were clarified; things I never understood were made clear for the first time. My favourite adjective of praise has always been "clear," and this book has clarity all the way through." --Philip Pullman, author of "The Good Man Jesus and the Scoundrel Christ" and the "His Dark Materials" trilogy"I wanted to write this book but I wasn't clever enough. Now I've read it, I am" --Ricky Gervais"I am often asked to recommend good books on science for young people. From now on, I will not have to hesitate. "The Magic of Reality" provides a beautiful, accessible and wide ranging volume that addresses the questions that all of us have about the universe, separating often too-little known facts from too-frequently believed fictions. For this reason it should be a powerful resource for people of all ages, written with the masterful and eloquently literate style of perhaps the best popular expositor of science, Richard Dawkins, and delightfully illustrated by Dave McKean. What more could anyone ask for?" --Lawrence Krauss is Foundation Professor and Director of the Origins Project at Arizona State University and the author most recently of "Quantum Man", and "A Universe from Nothing"

I have read several other books by Richard Dawkins, (The Selfish Gene, The Blind Watchmaker and The God Delusion), and he never ceases to amaze and educate me in the "facts and truth of reality." In a very clear and simple (Too easy and too simple at times), way this fantastic book explains the unique differences between magical thinking and scientific evaluations. Even though I suspect Mr. Dawkins wrote this book for children, adults who also believe in magical answers also need to read this educational book. He emphasizes truthfully, that real magic is how our universe began and how life evolved over billions of years. Each chapter begins with a question followed with a mystical ancient story and he than explains the factual scientific answer. There are 12 interesting and informative chapters. They include the following:Chapter 1: What is reality? What is magic? 2. Who was the first person? 3. Why are there so many different kinds of animals? 4. What are things made of? 5. Why do we have night and day, winter and summer? 6. What is the sun? 7. What is a rainbow? 8. When and how did everything begin? 9. Are we alone? 10. What is an earthquake? 11. Why do bad things happen? 12. What is a miracle? In conclusion, this is the kind of book that is so interesting that it keeps you turning the pages. This book should be required reading for all students, teachers, and anyone else who is tempted to believe in mystical and illogical answers for how and why the world works in reality.Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Never Trust a Politician)

First, if you're just going to write a scathing review (not of the book but of Richard Dawkins) because you blindly follow B.S. artists like William Lane Craig, save it for you tube.Second, to those complaining about (or defending the virtue of) the book's apparent simplicity, stop pretending you aren't a layman. Isn't everyone else as sick as me of the endless complaints of books which they claim "dumb down" scientific subjects, as if the average Amazon reader in the market for scientific broadening is a trolling world-class scientist? We all know REAL scientists don't have time to review books on Amazon! Quit trying in vain to show off here.Just review the effing book...and keep it real! Here's mine: This is one of my favorite Richard Dawkins books. He may be aiming for children in the way the information is presented. But, I think most people (the average adult-like me) is not scientifically brilliant. We can quote basic facts about science, which we are most likely regurgitating anyway-not truly understanding. Dawkins gives simple, yet clear explanations for many scientific truths that escape me. He brings me closer to a clearer understanding of the world around me.Aiming for children or not, this book will educate anyone who's highest level of science education was in an American high school 20 years ago, despite their viewing of countless Attenborough narrated documentaries. Many of us think we understand evolution. Nonsense. Most people who say they understand it, have nothing more than a confused idea of it. For those people (of which I am one) you will find the section entitled, "Who was the first person?" a really great place to start. Having a firm grasp of the basic idea of evolution is the first step. Get that before you move on to weightier concepts. Most people have HEARD of evolution, fewer people actually study it.This book will inspire children to ask deeper and more profound questions about the things they don't yet understand. Parents will fill in some of the many gaps in their own scientific shortcomings...so hopefully they will be able to have discussions with their children about science. It's either that, or look ignorant in front of your children as their knowledge surpasses yours by age fifteen. In fact, this should be a great book to read WITH your child. I am really looking forward to sharing it with my four-year-old in a few years.Or, you could skip this one and pick up another volume of "biblical stories for children" such as Noah's Ark, or The Garden of Eden. What kind of parent will you be?

It was great fun. I am a (retired) academic biologist and I WISH that in the 1940s and early 1950s when I was a scholar and undergraduate student there had been someone like Richard Dawkins to introduce me to the wonders of the Life Sciences. The youngsters today are privileged to have access to works such as he has published.. Like Dawkins, I was born in Africa and had first-hand experience of much of what he so eloquently describes. Like him I was "hooked" on the Biological and Earth sciences early. We were privileged . However I still envy the fledgling scientists who have books like 'The Magic of Reality" to ease their way in to formal biological studies.

This is a fantastic book. 5 stars for the book in hard-cover form. But the paper back version loses a good part of it's readability for a young reader.I borrowed the hard cover version from a local library, and it is fantastic. One of the good features about the hard cover version are the pictures. The paper back version I bought here has none of the pictures. My daughter (12 yo) liked the hard cover book, but only got half way through it. I bought the paperback to let her finish at her leisure. However, without the pictures the material is a much less interesting source of information. Don't bother trying to save money and shelf space. The paper back version is not the same as the hard cover in much more critical ways than those.
