I am going to the Okavango delta in about a week. Bought several books to learn more about the areas I am going to visit. This book impressed me the most, because the knowledge I acquired through its reading. As the author mixes information of the landscape and climate with the descriptio of the behaviour of different animals, it painted such a vivid image that it is easy now for me to remember that jackals mate for life and both strongly help raise their young,that Baobabs store incredible amounts of water and shrink considerably in the dry season. How acacias become nutritious food through their leaves, seed pods and flowers. How a secretary bird kills snakes, and a poetic description of how the rains bestow life to a thirsty environment. The Kalahari comes to life through this book, like no other I have read on the subject. Highly recomended if you want to know more about the subject, and want fluid prose.
This is a superb book about a little known region. Whether to bring back memories of a trip, or plan for a future journey, or just to enjoy -- highly recommended.
