First, let me offer a clinical definition of sex. "Sex is the mental and or physical stimulation of nerve ends, creating electrochemical energy resulting in pleasurable sensations in the genitalia AND OTHER SEXUAL RESPONSES." In The Holy Letter,Nahmanides recommends lying North-South. Perhaps being in line with the earth's magnetic field may aid the ions in their pursuit of genetic expression. What impressed me most as a Protestant--I protest everything--was the Hebrew translation of Leviticus 12:2: "When a woman has an emission..." This is the first reference to female ejaculatory orgasms in Western Literature! It is attributed to Moses (1425 BCE) and thought by some to first be transcribed from the oral tradition by Ezra around 1000 BCE. However, most scholars today suggest it was first transcribed around 400 BCE. It was around 400 BCE when Hippocrates came up with the "double seed" theory. This said male ejaculate and female ejaculate each contained seeds needed for conception of a child. Ergo, the only way a woman could have a child was if both parties ejaculated! Galen (200 CE) confirmed this. The Roman Church from its inception in 325 CE, promoted female ejaculatory orgasm for purposes of procreation until 1770 when a scientist successfully artificially inseminated a water spaniel. Granted, this position was weakened by Leeuwenhoek in the late 1660's when he could only see male sperm under the microscope. But this was blown off because women were inferior and probably had smaller seed. When the KJV was written in 1611, it says, "When a woman conceive a seed..." Now, you know what that means. The point is for 3000 years--and probably thousands before that--women had ejaculatory orgasms as a matter of course. They've only been shut down for the past 200 years or so. I find it strange that Christianity, especially the Roman Church that keeps marriage as a sacrament, treats sex so profanely, when many pagan religions treat it as sacred. Nahmanides also recommends an attitude of reverence for the woman and the act. In Tantra, the vulva is called the "yoni" which means the sacred place. It is regrettable that even many in Judaism treat sex so profanely. There are rewards beyond men's wildest dreams for showing respect, reverence and love for your wife. I touch upon them in The Sacred Female.

While it is interesting we don't know who the author is. The book expresses a point of view but not necessarily a definitive one. More something for a scholar to mull over than a manual for anyone. Nice seeing original Hebrew and the (good) translation.

A MUST FOR ALL THE JEWISH COUPLES WHO REALLY DO NOT KNOW THE WHAT IS PERMITTED AND WHAT NOT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE REAL JEWISH WAY AND LAWSSHOULD READ IT

This is a translation of a famed Kabbalistic letter attributed to Nachmanides (Moses ben Nachman) including a lengthy introduction describing the history of the work (1/3 of book) & an English translation side-by-side with Hebrew. The translator, former President of the Rabbinical Assembly of Conservative Judaism, argues that its author was Joseph Gikatilla (vs. Avraham Feuer's translation, "A Letter for the Ages"). The Letter draws from Biblical/Talmudic sources & employs Kabbalistic ideas & terms. It addresses the purpose, nature, time, diet, intention, & quality of the sex act. It rejects Maimonides & p. 74: "the accursed Greek" Aristotle's contention that touch is shameful. Rather, p. 72: "The sexual intercourse of man with his wife is holy & pure when done properly, in the proper time & with the proper intention" & p. 92: "The sages said when a man unites with his wife in holiness, the Shekhinah is between them in the mystery of man & woman." However, p. 94: "the divine presence leaves them when the act is for sexual pleasure alone." It also says that too much sex weakens a man, late Sabbath evening is the best time, to not have sex after eating, to not overeat, & to have the bed north-south.It has some gems of wisdom-- pp. 108-110: "The master of true wisdom knows that extremes are not prudent & the qualities of moderation are most desirable" & p. 110: "Solomon said, `be not righteous overmuch; neither make yourself otherwise" (Ecclesiastes 7:16) & Kabbalistic metaphysics-- p. 122: "When an animal is slaughtered for human consumption, it is for the animal's good, for it rises from the level of the body of an animal to the level of the body of a man." On the other hand it argues enigmatically that p. 136: "The thought of sin is more grievous than the sin itself (Yoma 29a)," & shows primitive understanding of human physiology & genetics (it WAS written in the Middle Ages) such as techniques for conceiving male children & attributing birth of a black child to white parents because the curtains in the room were black--so they thought of black during conception! Thus, it juxtaposes profound insight with superstition, & fantasy. Its anachronisms shed light on the development of knowledge & understanding, though they may seem rather quaint today.
