This is well written and entertaining. It seems to be based on historical facts and not speculation., Many "pirate books" seem to suffer from the authors' desire to merely speculate on personal motivations, and some even betray personal or social bias in their reporting. I do not get the sense that this is true of Mr. Woodard, and I'm grateful for that.

Probably the best book written about the pirates who raised havoc in the Caribbean and the Eastern Coast of North America from Charleston to Maine. They're all here. Samuel Bellamy, Edward Thatch (Teach), the infamous 'Blackbeard', Charles Vane and the 'gentleman pirate' Stede Bonnet whose despite a total lack of maritime skills enters into piracy and is rewarded with failure after failure in his miserable attempts at the trade.There are many more men (and women) who engage in piracy and the culmination of their demise by the efforts of Woodes Rogers, the Governor of the Bahamas, himself a tragic figure in the long run.Colin Woodward has gone to great lengths to detail the short careers of these people and their successes as well as failures with their pillages and subsequent 'booty' taken in these raids. What surprised me is most anything was 'treasure' to the pirates. Forget the gold, silver and pieces of eight stories you've heard. Sure that was the stuff to have but cloth, silk, flour, wine, bread, livestock and even barrels of nails and wood were taken as well. Pirate captains were elected by their crews. Do well and manage to raid commerce vessels whose holds contained marketable goods and you kept your position as leader of the crew. Have repeated failures (life Stede Bonnet) and you could find yourself either voted out and back as a regular crew member or worse, contest your ouster and have the crew dump you on the nearest sandbar or uninhabited island as you stood watching your ship and former comrades sail off in the distance. I also never knew that pirates slaughtering crew members of ships they raided was a rarity. Most pirates would attempt to get these sailors to join their ranks (piracy was much more lucrative than being a sailor on a merchant vessel) or some were impressed into it because of a needed skill like a surgeon, carpenter or seasoned deck hand. After cleaning out the hold of a ship sometimes the captain was given a token payment for the cargo or he and his crew were set ashore somewhere desolate. Usually a place they would be found long after the pirates were gone. In most cases their ship was either seized and added to the pirate fleet, burned to the waterline or in many cases kept by the pirates and the captain and crew given a smaller vessels from the pirate fleet that had been seized earlier and sent on their way.This book is a terrific read and chock full of details. Well worth the money spent.

I love this book!!! As a history buff and adventurer, I found The Republic of Pirates to be a thrilling education of an era all too often overly romanced in the movies and tv programs. The true stories backed by documentation of those who were there are so far more exciting than fiction. All the stories herein are told in such a way that it was difficult to put the book down. I love the footnotes, proof of sources, and all the hard work that went into this book! Excellent and many thanks to the author for not taking the lazy route in putting this together. I highly recommend this book for any who want to know the real story of some of the most notorious pirates in history, how they lived, what inspired them and ultimately what led to their demise. This will be a reference in my library to return to many times in the future. Thank you Colin Woodard for such a fabulous book.

An extraordinary tale about extraordinarily lives. I almost ran out of pages on my notebook and learned more than I expected. Fascinating stuff.I regard this book with mixed emotions. On one hand I loved the information and was impressed with the level of detail. On the other I couldn't help but think that the book needed a more efficient approach. Reading this book is laborious due in lart to the dry writing style and it also contains unneeded material that's best fitted in the footnote section.Except from my notes:This book helped me strip the eye patch and introduced me to the real people behind the legends. Captains like Sam Bellamy (Black Sam) believed that their deeds were justified and even fancied himself a Robin Hood. Edward Thatch aka Blackbeard was the stereotypical pirate. He embraced the rugged appearance to the point of having fire and smoke emanate from his hat in order to scare his rivals into submission.

A very good read. It's rare to find an historical non-fiction that's both engaging and informative. The narrative is both gripping and suspenseful enough to keep you on the edge of your seat, without the author committing the "sin" so many historians do, namely, of omniscience. It's well-researched, and well-written. Reading this, it's easy to see how, if things had gone just little differently at so many junctures, independence could have been declared in North America 50 some years before 1776.

I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer in March of 2016 (this year). My first treatment was chemotherapy. Being thrown into such an intense course of treatment that brought severe side effects caused me to look into books to help me make good food choices through the 5.5 month treatment. I stumbled upon this book and am so grateful for finding it!I bought it used and even appreciated the previous owner's handwritten notes within it.I like that the author has personally worked with oncology patients as well as having had cancer affect her own household. I also like that she takes a whole food approach. In my oncologist's waiting room, there were a number of magazine resources for eating "healthy" through cancer, but I felt that they promoted a lot of processed foods, whereas this book encourages preparing your own meals and snacks and gives many alternatives for things to make when a chemo patient doesn't really have an appetite. I am now through my chemotherapy treatment, having just had surgery and will be on to radiation therapy, but I intend to continue to make use of the recipes in this book. I really like the almond muffin recipe and the variations of it that she suggests (especially the chocolate variation)!If you are looking for a personal resource for getting through cancer or to support a friend or family member going through cancer, I highly recommend this book!

I bought this book after seeing it at a relative's home, a person with cancer. As I went through the book I realized that it is not valuable just for those with cancer but for all of us who use food as medicine all the time. It is in philosophical line with "Nourishing Traditions". "Radical Medicine", and "Deep Nutrition". The Cancer-Fighting Kitchen is a user friendly cookbook - clearly written, filled with information on how to maintain one's best health through what we eat. Best of all is that the recipes produce delicious foods. I use this book all the time, yet it is written specifically for cancer patients, including 'strategies for thriving during treatment' and the wonderful 'culinary pharmacy' which gives the beneficial properties of the foods, herbs, and spices used in the recipes. I am such a fan of Rebecca Katz's book! As she states, here's to "The power of Yum!"

This is not a 'cure-your-cancer-with-diet' book, but a very helpful, sensible book of recipes that help you get through treatments. For example, there is a chilled soup of cucumber and avocado, cooling and smooth to swallow when swallowing is hampered by mouth sores from the treatments. Another example is melon slushies - a step better than ice, th slushie has a little nutrition in it.In my opinion, a good cookbook has to have pictures that inspire you to eat and this one is full of them.The author, Rebecca Katz, is founder of a culinary practice that specializes in meeting the specific nutritional needs of cancer patients. She has been a chef and guest lecturer at top academic medical centers throughout the country.She offers easy solutions for side effects such as nausea, dehydration, fatigue, weight loss, and others. She describes fat, acid, salt, sweet adjustments for taste changes, as well as compassionate and sensible Strategies for Thriving during Treatment (title of chapter 2).In this book, the author makes tough things sound doable, which I think is part of her compassion and sensible-ness.

I purchased this cookbook for a friend going through surgery, radiation, and chemo treatments for breast cancer. I just wanted to be helpful to her and lighten her load a little by bringing her healthy things to eat to strengthen her body. I gave the book to her and let her pick out some things that looked good to her, and that way she could also read the first chapters about what to do to prepare for chemo and its side effects, then I took it back so I could make those things for her.After receiving it in the mail and looking through the pages I have come back to order another one. The beginning of the book has a plethora of helpful information about staying ahead of the downsides of chemo, ahead of the nausea, ahead of the drain to the body, prepared for the days when "the-tireds" hit, and it just packs a wallop of nutrition for the body (any body, but especially the fighting body). I want to have another one on hand to use or to give away for other friends down the road. And even for myself just to make healthier meals for my family.The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is... 1) several recipes (main dishes) are time consuming and laborious (shopping for and then cutting and chopping lots of ingredients). It is not a biggie if you are making things out of the book to take to your fighting friend, but if you are the one fighting you might not have the energy for all of it unless you prepare ahead of time and freeze things. 2) I couldn't find some of the ingredients at my local grocery store (organic turkey/chicken products - my grocery only caries "natural" which I'm told is basically the same except for the feed that was fed to the animals, and organic beef bones; and some exotic vegetables like garnet yams,Japanese sweet potatoes,kombu, juniper berries, asian or anjou pears, etc. ). AND 3) there is the (necessary) cost factor of using organic ingredients (I was surprised the recipes called for organic meat/eggs/some dairy, but not organic veggies or fruits).

Great study guideGot a few different books to prepare for my exam, but I liked this one best. Before you read anything, you take the first practice test and use that as a baseline. Then you take the second practice test after you’ve gone through everything. This really helped me see what areas I needed to focus on and really gave some structure to an otherwise daunting task of preparing.  One of the strengths of this study manual is that you don’t just read the book cover to cover. There’s a dedicated, well thought out system that helps you get the most out of your study time. From the study calendar to the different ways to review the material, you really get to comprehend the information.  Highly recommend.

This book is a perfect prep guide. It’s not just a study guide but a whole system to get the most out of your time and money. They set you up for success with the modules, practice tests, and calendar. Having a set calendar helped me focus on one thing at a time rather than overwhelming myself with too much information all at time. The modules are packed with information. Having two additional practice tests gave me a chance to review specific areas that I needed the most work on. Definitely don’t skip out on that no study day before the test.

I purchased my niece this book as an added supplement to her already growing collection of nursing books. She has told me that it's really helped her in terms of the sheer volume of practice questions. The science section was much harder than other counterpart sections, but it's really helped boost her confidence and has definitely made her more prepared. I would definitely recommend this book!

A great book if you need a solid review and practice tests. If that wasn't enough, this book also gives you a strategy and plan for studying for the teas exam. Taking the teas can be a little overwhelming especially if you have test anxiety like me. I got several books, but none had the instruction and planning this one did. I used the other books but read this one the most. Just made me feel more confident. I think it was the strategic plan for getting through the book.Didn't see the typos and mistakes some other reviews mentioned, which almost made me pass this one up. I would recommend you overlook the naysayers and trust the study system from spire!

You'll want to pick this up- Let me say this, if you're taking the teas in anytime soon, you'll want to pick up this study guide along with any other prep materials you think you need. The guide breaks down the exam into different parts and tells you what to expect. Then get ready to dig in. It won't be easy. I mean studying for a test is never fun. But you want to invest in your future, right? There's lots of info in the book, but you will feel well prepared if you make it through everything- Good Luck!

I ordered this book along with ATI Teas Secrets to study for my TEAS exam. I only had 2 weeks to prepare and found that I only ended up really using the practice exams. In this book I struggled with the science questions and it made me feel like I was going to fail the science portion of the exam. After taking the exam today I felt like the questions in this book were over complicated. I think it is good to be prepared but I did not have time to go so far in depth. This book may have a good study system but I did not have time to go through all of it. Also there seemed to be a lot of errors in this book which makes me think it was unedited. What really helped me was watching YouTube videos on each of the subjects that I needed to review the most (especially all the body systems!) and then taking the practice tests. If you are a visual/auditory learner I highly recommend that approach! If you don't have a lot of time it might not be worth getting a book unless you want to use the practice exams (I feel the same way about the other book I purchased, except it's science questions were easier) I am confident with my English and math so I spent 90% of my study time on science. I got an 82.7 percent on the exam this morning. Good luck!

If I could give zero stars I would. This book was riddled with incomplete questions and incorrect answers. After using this book for a few days, I realized it was pure crap. I ended up buying the Barron’s practice test book and was pleased with that. Two days using Barron’s and I scored a 91.5. Don’t be fooled by this crappy study guide, it will only hurt you.

I purchased this book to help me study and to get a baseline of how prepared I was. I've also gone through a different book that I borrowed from a friend, but it pales in comparison to this one. I was a bit skeptical after reading some of the reviews that mention grammatical errors and typos, but decided to take the plunge anyways. I'm certainly glad I did. I didn't notice any of the aforementioned problems, so I'm not sure what all that fuss is about. Before I received it, though, I assumed it would be just like the other book I borrowed, but boy was I wrong!First and foremost, I love how this book separates and breaks down the different sections, making it much easier to take in the information I was reading, as opposed to being a chore just trying to get through it. The way that everything is laid out makes it easy to understand, while also being exceptionally thorough. Not only has it helped to relieve some of my stress from studying, but I actually learned a few things that I didn't realize I didn't remember. The practice tests are great, and an excellent boost to better prepare oneself for the material that will be covered by the actual test.I'll be walking into this exam with confidence gained from the prepping I've done with this book, with no doubt that I'm going to pass. I also feel very confident in recommending this book to anyone who is studying for the TEAS, and trying to better their future. It has been an absolute lifesaver for me!

This book is a very easy to use reference book. It should be called Quick and Easy Lookup Medical Transcription Guide: Do's and Don'ts. It is just an amazing book. I purchased this on Amazon not expecting too much because I have the 3rd edition of AAMT Book of Style and also the Workbook which are both excellent, but for a few cents (yes cents), I decided to try this. However, to my surprise it follows the same standards as the AAMT Book of Style, and it even has quite a few samples of medical documents. It is a very good reference book and you can find anything you want in the blink of an eye. This will be added to my library of MT books and will be used as much as the others.Let us not forget the Do's and Don'ts because this is a great aspect of the book. Just think of a MT question and the answer is before you. I know I am reapeating myself but I embrace anything that will make my life easier and this is one of them.

I wish this was out text book for my class. So full of much needed information and small enough to take to work. A wonderful guide even though it's a little older. I highly recommend this book.

This is like a bible for the medical transcriber. When you do diversified work in the medical field sometimes you forget the format to use and this book gives that to you in easy reference form. There are so many other things this book offers in a concise way. It comes highly recommended.

This book is awesome for a couple of reasons. First and foremost, it's very comprehensive--containing grammar, spelling, medical transcription-specific info, frequently misused words & sound-alikes, lab values, and much more. This is my bible, even though it hasn't been updated for a while and is definitely due. I can't wait for the new version to come out!The spiral-bound version is a real bonus because it's so much easier to use and not lose your place.

I used this book in my medical transcription class in college. We used it alot this semester and i learned things that i didnt know before. the book itself was in good condition.

Do NOT purchase anything for Medical Transcription!! Please!! This is an almost defunct career choice. As a 37+ year veteran in this field, almost every job has been absorbed by the new computer policies of the Obamacare regime. Almost every transcription job has been cut. There are no jobs, so it's not wise to invest in any tools to do this job. Do yourself a favor and don't waste your money on anything related to this field. It is just about impossible to get a job and there are people with YEARS of experience all over the country who are out of work. I know of one facility that went from 40 transcriptions, down to 3, and that is just one facility!!

I am a new MT and have found this book very helpful. The table of contents (listed alphabetically - nice) is on the back cover that folds over, which I have found easy to use. I LOVE that it is spiral bound, as it only takes up half as much space on my desk. It also includes appendices for items such as problem words, genus and species names, commonly used abbreviations, etc.
