A very nicely written book by Steven Pinker, with the usual and very well known Chomskian approach. As a University Professor, I do not share Pinker's approach and his views, but I find the book useful for courses in Linguistics, and some examples are also applicable to the history of the origins of numbers and numbering systems.

The book Words and Rules: The Ingredients of Language was written by Steven Pinker, a cognitive psychologist who has written a variety of booksabout language and other topics related to psychology. He is also currently a psychology professor at Harvard University. The book looks at words and rules, which are what language consists of and helps us understand language. Steven Pinker’s language in this book makes it very easy for the reader to understand complex information about how our brain works the way it does when it comes to language. He provides real-life examples and things that are “relatable” in order to better explain his findings to the reader.The book begins with Pinker describing the “mental dictionary,” which is described almost as similarly as vocabulary by Pinker, in which a string of letters and sounds is associated with something, whether it be an object, person, place, or thing. After the idea of a “mental dictionary,” is interested, Pinker goes into details about the “combinatorial system,” which is when words provide an infinite number of combinations which can become into phrases and sentences and paragraphs. But because of grammar and other rules that we learn throughout our lives, these combinations go down immensely. After explaining these two phenomena, he emphasizes the title of the book by explaining that the understanding of words and rules are critical in the dissection of language. Then, regular and irregular verbs are brought up which gives a better look into the rules, because a study is done on 7-year olds showing that kids add –s to make a word plural and add –ed to make a word past tense, despite never hearing the word before. After this, he brings up irregular verbs and how there are way less of these than regular verbs and these require to store them in your “mental dictionary.” Pinker also examines how our brains react to new words. He explains this with the “words and rules” theory, which states that people use rules for regular verbs and people use their memory and patterns for irregular verbs. Pinker points out that regular verbs do not have to be retrieved by the memory at all, while people have to rely on their memory for irregular verbs in order to dig up similar irregular verbs and apply its rules to a new irregular word. Another theory that is closely looked at is the “word structure theory,” in which people understand that a word or a phrase hails from another word, but might not know why or how. In this book, Pinker also closely examines children and the mistakes they make of added –ed to past-tense irregular verbs (goed) and sometimes even –ed to past-tense irregular verbs that they have said correctly, such as wented (went). Pinker then explains his theory of the blocking principle, which is when children need to listen to past-tense irregular verbs being said in order for them to register in their minds that certain words are irregular and you cannot just add –ed to the ending. Also, he adds that a parent correcting their child when they use an ungrammatical word is ineffective. He mentions that parents correcting their children does not work, because children have the rules in their head and apply them and that the rules for irregular verbs must be learned. Toward the end of the book, Pinker goes into the brain and its significance in language. He demonstrates how damage in different parts of the brain could affect different parts of speech; for example, more damage could be done to the mental grammar than the mental dictionary. He then concludes the book by explaining that our mind is digital because we remember rules but also have to retrieve specific information.Steve Pinker’s book explaining words and rules is full of examples which are relatable to whoever is reading which makes it easier to follow along throughout the book and understand what he is trying to say. By providing an example everyone can connect with, about the younger people mispronouncing words he emphasizes his theory of “words and rules” by taking the reader back to his or her earliest stages of learning to speak. The various studies mentioned throughout the book, primarily involving children, are crucial to Pinker’s argument about irregular verbs and what our brain can pick up immediately versus what is recorded through patterns, like his study involving children and how they can correct themselves despite picking the wrong verbiage. His explanation of ways in which people try to substitute our understanding of ‘irregular’ verbs is well explained, by his pointing out that it would take us several seconds, or even minutes, to decipher the word we were trying to say if we used some of the more complex systems people have tried coming up with throughout history. One complaint I do have about the book though is the various charts that do not seem to help me with the underlying message of what he is trying to get across. The book could do without them and still be legible and clear. The dialogues of fresh English-speakers present in the book are good at illustrating the different points he is making about language and what the trouble areas are for them and what is simple for them. When explaining irregular verbs, he provides a string of the same word in different forms to illustrate the patterns involved in knowing and retrieving them. Also, throughout the book there are illustrations, such as the one of the brain, that shows different damages in different areas of the brain, and there also little comic strips throughout the book. These illustrations support the argument he is making. Overall, it was an informative book that explained the mechanisms of our language and how we learn and react to it.This book about language by Steven Pinker is a well-written, informative book that delves deeper into regular and irregular verbs and our minds. The various studies and illustrations throughout the book help illustrate he’s making at the point the illustration shows up. Pinker uses his words well to explain his words and rules theory about language, and it is fun to read.

I have long been a Steven Pinker fan. It is great to have a neurologist appear who can explain the workings of the brain in a fairly easy to understand, often humorous and precise way. Words & Rules, though made my head hurt. I felt a little like the rat in Flowers for Algernon: a vague feeling that I might have understood this more easily at one time not too long ago, but boy is this difficult to wade through now. Which is to say I blame myself rather than Pinker. I think it's a very difficult subject and my tenuous grasp of grammar didn't help. Unlike his previous books, an actual understanding of the parts of speech helps here.That said, delving into the minutiae of how the brain works is ultimately rewarding, even if I only understood maybe 75% of this. Watching vicariously as Pinker et al close in how how we think and talk is truly awesome. I find myself paying close attention to how I speak; how I hesitate in choosing words; what associations I seem to need to find a word or person... . Very cool, though you can probably get sucked into some kind of fugue state if you overdo it.Still highly recommended, but make sure you're snowed in somewhere and have a lot of coffee.George

This book is my new favourite book. It is so neat to read about Audrey from a personal aspect. The recipes are interesting/fun, and I am so excited to try them. I love the history and stories that accompany them. With most cases in life, that is what is more important than the recipe itself so it is fun to hear about them. I loved flipping through and seeing all the photographs, as well. This is a beautiful book, tribute, and memoir of life with Audrey from the person who knows her best, and I am so thankful that this was published. I found myself smiling after reading certain paragraphs, and you could really feel her personality behind story that was told. An absolutely wonderful read that I will absolutely continue to read and go back to, and utilize recipes from. Beautiful book.

Just when you thought you'd read everything about Audrey there could ever be, here comes a charming book written by someone who should know his Audrey— her son, Luca Dotti. In "Audrey at Home" (subtitled "Memories of my Mother's Kitchen") he tells us that Audrey may not have been the best cook, but whatever she served was made with love. Love indeed makes everything taste delicious.This is not a recipe book with stories, this is a book of stories (and many photos) with recipes. Luca says if you only ever prepare two dishes, they should be Audrey's flour-less Chocolate Cake with Whipped Cream and Penne with Ketchup (which doesn't sound half bad— the ketchup is just a splash). Many of the recipes are very continental and perhaps a little too formal for the way we cook today, but this is cookbook reading of the best kind— no cooking required.Luca's memories of his parents are seen through a child's eyes. His life in Italy was carefree until his parents' divorce when Luca was twelve. Despite the split he remained close to his father, as did Audrey and Andrea. I always had the feeling Andrea Dotti was a bit of a bounder and could never fathom what Audrey saw in him. Luca reminds us that love can be blind.Audrey retired from films for many years to raise her two children, first in Italy, then in Switzerland. She loved her home there, "La Paisable", with its many gardens. The book's photos are candids, snapshots and/or family photographs with added snippets of recipe cards and notes. It's a privilege to get to know this out-of-the-public-eye Audrey, and I thank Luca for sharing. Of course we love her even more.

My daughters bought me this book hot off the press and I devoured it the first night in one sitting. What a lovely testament to one of the world's most beautiful women. Audrey's son Luca shares the very private world of his mother in a book that is a must for fans. The stories mixed with his memories and all of her delicious recipes are purely magical. The photographs are as lovely as the graceful woman in them and the way it's all put together made me feel such a connection while reading it. Not only did Luca love his mother, but he understands how the fans loved her and he's shared her story in a way that would have made her incredibly proud. Bravo!

Wonderful book. Part memoir, part cookbook. Full of never before seen personal photos from Audrey's personal life. And recipes in Audrey's original handwriting! Easy enough for even cooking challenged people like me to try. A must for fans and anyone who enjoys getting a peak into the personal life of a great star. Audrey definitely loved to eat. (appearances were deceiving). Many thanks to her son Luca for putting this book together. A real treasure. One can enjoy looking at the photos after cooking a good meal (using recipes from this book!)

Luca Dotti was born after Audrey's most famous films were well behind her, so he was raised largely unaware of her stature as one of brightest stars ever in the Hollywood firmament. His observations about his "mom" are woven here around Audrey's favorite recipes, which she often cooked or whipped up herself. It's a unique concept for a unique book about a unique woman who was so much more than the movies she was famous for. Like Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn completely dismissed the very idea of ever writing a book about herself. But I think she would have been very proud of the book her son has written, inspired by the commonplace items usually left behind, and undiscovered, in a kitchen drawer.

What a treat this book is to read. For years I’ve heard of the flourless chocolate cake thatAudrey Hepburn frequently made and at last I have the recipe. The same with her pasta recipes made with home grown, garden fresh tomatoes. Who ever thought that soy sauce would work with pasta? Great match.Reading how this fashionable woman raised her boys, entertained, worked in films, dance, and a representative for the United Nations was also intriguing and informative.A terrific book, and the author is a great credit to his mother.

My daughter wanted this book so badly. I got it as soon as it was released. My daughter then cooked Audrey's favorite spaghetti recipe. We went shopping picked the best tomatoes , and carrots. Dinner that night was delightful. My daughter is loves Audrey watching all her movies over and over. I just purchased her the dvd sets. For only 17 she appreciates the person Audrey was. What's strange is my daughter looks a lot like her. This book is wonderful and the family photos are just a wonderful added touch. Only wish I could have had it signed because it would have made my daughter just so darn happy. Thank you for sharing so much of who she was.

I loved the story, it started with a alot of action and drama. It had me at the edge of my seat, couldn't put the book down. The whole story was great but it left me wanting more, I didn't want the story to end.

The Mercenary Pirate begins with an exciting encounter in a tavern that has the hero, Wolf, bargaining with a pirate to purchase/rescue a woman, Selina, who is disguised as a boy. It's followed by a brawl, fights, a fire, an escape by sea, and an ambush, as well as more mundane exchanges to explain how Selina came to be in such terrible straits and Wolf's own amazing background. And Wolf's background is truly incredible; "mercenary pirate" is merely a cover for the character who works as a spy for Wellington during the Napoleonic Wars and claims to have honed martial arts skills in Japan and tracking skills with the Indians of the colonies. The tale is filled with action, intrigue, and a bit of romance... sort of Wolverine goes to sea and falls in love.I found the story to be fun so long as I didn't think very hard about any of the details. People change their minds and things work out seemingly because everyone automatically understands that Wolf and Selina are the heroes. The first chapter is crammed full of explanations of people and events that happened in the past, presumably in one the 9 previous books of the series which are not currently available for the Kindle. Most of the characters are shallow and easily summed up with a name and a couple adjectives. I very much felt like I was reading a comic story without the pictures.On the plus side, the writing was competent with minimal spelling or grammatical errors, making it a pleasant read. It's just not really my cup of tea.

Reading the first have of this book I was positive this was going to be a five star book for me but then the second half slipped a little (when she arrived home) and the ending didn't tie up any of the loose ends at all at the end of the book! Not the villain, not the h's missing brother, not the H's missing evil brother and not the story behind the H's missing family! It was like I wasted my time reading this book. I don't know if this was a book that was supposed to have a sequel, if it was I wish it had said that from the begining. I like stand alones and this didn't read like one at the end! I gave it a three star because I did like the first part of the book and the main Characters! But like me, without a proper ending you might find it very disappointing otherwise!

It appears the publisher has omitted portions of the author's treatments, such as the "Magnificent Seven" from the ADHD/ADD section. The author clearly states the information is below when there is NOTHING. I had to look online for the information she refers to in many cases, as the publisher neglected to include it, or purposely removed. Very frustrating, and time consuming. This situation occurs in numerous areas of the book.When you've paid for a book that states the information the author is leading up to is there, and then it isn't that's a problem (for me at least).Ongoing typos throughout the book (continually stating "of" instead of "or" in nearly every instance), and considerable overuse of exclamation points became hard to take after awhile. Appears some serious proof reading by the publisher would be warranted.

I really really wanted to like this Kindle book. What was there was well written and well researched and useful. Unfortunately most of the conditions I was interested in were missing the lists of recommended remedies.

I find this book is helpful. I have learned so much from this book. The author describe the concept nicely. I am very happy that I purchase this book. Recommend this book.

I am loving all the natural remedies suggested in this book, a lot of which I have never heard of before. For example, we can use activated charcoal and apple cider vinegar for removing gas. Inside the book, she also recommends brands she uses and likes, so that readers can save their time from researching related products and different interesting cleansing options are listed at the very end of the book, where lily has listed details instructions on how you can perform each type of cleansing technique as well as shared her personal experience and thoughts on doing some of the cleanse and Some of it is about how to fix your system if you've already messed it up, but large parts of it are more preventative and If you're looking for good health information, Natural Cures For Digestive Problems is a good resource!

This is a beautiful reference book, and as designers, we rely on it for project inspiration. Dianne Keaton had a hand in this publication, and it is a treasure. We bought this as a second copy to loan to our clients, very happy to have found this on Amazon!

This is a wonderful, evocative book. Takes me back to dreamy, fanciful Southern California - the one that may have existed in the early part of the previous century. If you are looking for a book that has professionally laid out, full-color photos of exteriors and rooms, don't get this one. But if you want to re-visit that romantic, magical time that is still evoked in these exquisite structures, go for it - you will be rewarded and inspired. (Actually, this is a lovely and interesting - and very large - coffee table book, as well...)

This is a beautiful book but it has some major problems I think. There are too many closeups and detail shots and not enough big picture photos. The photos are very dark and the lighting while very interesting does not allow one to gleen much information for the reader. Not enough pictues of interiors that are furnished. The black boarder to the photos just adds to the the darkness.If you want to learn and not just browse about this look, then this is not the book for you.

As one of the three children of George and Louise Welsh who purchased one of these homes (Casa Romantica) in 1960 I am thrilled with this book. Our family considers it a work of art as well as a fitting memorial to the history of this very special architecture. My parents owned the Casa Romantica for 30 years, the longest of any of the previous inhabitants. We have a unique and enduring love of the "Casa" and the City of San Clemente who have created the Cultural Center that it is today. Beautiful book.

This book is special in that the photographs have captured the spanish details that make a building warm and desirable. Slowly going through the pages is an experience that is so rich and pleasant that it leaves you with a natural excitement for tradition and life.

I purchased this as a research book for work. First off, I was taken aback by the reduced quality of the paper inside the book - very thick, and seemed to be a little bit gritty.This book is just not that special. Although meticulously researched, I must say that it felt like every house looked the same. The photographs are mostly of the architecture of these structures. It is gorgeous architecture, but after the first two houses, I got bored. Seems like there are pages and pages of shadows on walls, and empty rooms with beamed ceilings.I recommend the book Courtyard Housing of Los Angeles instead. That book is outstanding and a must have for fans of this California style.

This is an excellent ART book. The photos are exquisite but the whole of the book leaves a little too much left unsaid. The beauty of these period houses are the huge quantity of fine detail and how those details interact. To really get a feel for this type of style it's important to see those details in total and not just specific details in a vacuum. While the shots were all beautiful it would have been much better if the overall feel of the book was more encompassing instead of a macro view with the focus on fine art photography. I absolutely loved the photography, I just was left wanting a little more.
